Ballot Processing Junior Clerk | Department of Elections

The Tone:
This is a seasonal, temporary contract role located at the Department of Elections Office in San Francisco, CA. The Department’s mission is to ensure equitable access to voting and conduct free, fair, and functional elections for San Francisco residents. This role is crucial in supporting the Ballot Distribution division by accurately processing vote-by-mail ballots, contributing directly to the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process during election cycles.

• Mission: Assist with various ballot processing tasks to ensure the accurate and timely tabulation of election results.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Process vote-by-mail and provisional envelopes, including sorting, opening, and preparing them for tabulation and scanning according to established procedures.
• Assist with ballot processing steps such as backfolding, extraction, duplication, and interpreting ambiguous marks (adjudication) using standardized procedures.
• Support ballot tabulation and tracking efforts, maintaining basic processing logs and documentation as instructed.
• Provide general clerical support by organizing supplies, assembling materials, and assisting with the staging and distribution of election supplies.
• Perform assigned post-election tasks and sort and organize vote-by-mail envelopes for record retention.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Early Career professional with foundational clerical experience.
• Experience: Six months of clerical experience, which includes preparing and maintaining records/documents, filing, using office equipment, public contact, and processing mail.
• Skills: Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, strong attention to detail and accuracy, and the capacity to perform repetitive tasks.
• Bonus: Dependability, punctuality, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
