Research Assistant Intern – Soil Carbon Team, Summer Internships Program 2026 | Woodwell Climate Research Center
The Tone:
This is an internship at Woodwell Climate Research Center, located in Falmouth, MA. Woodwell Climate conducts science for solutions at the nexus of climate, people, and nature, partnering with leaders and communities for meaningful impact to address the climate crisis. This role on the Soil Carbon team is crucial for transforming raw data into actionable insights for a sustainable future, improving how we measure, map, and model dynamic agricultural systems. The internship provides on-site mentoring, training, and group support to apply computational tools to Earth’s complex soil systems.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Data Compilation: Compile and process spectroscopy and geospatial data within reproducible analysis pipelines to connect field science with data-driven insights.
• Pattern Discovery: Explore diverse datasets to uncover meaningful patterns, document scientific workflows, and present findings that inform research on soil systems.
• Tool Application: Apply data science and computational tools to research Earth’s complex and vital natural soil systems.
• Data Collection & Analysis: Analyze existing data from the Open Soil Spectral Library and potentially collect new data using lab instruments.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled in or graduating in Spring 2026 from an undergraduate or graduate program in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Soil Science, or a related field.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience with data analysis, including coursework or projects involving statistics, data cleaning, or visualization.
• Skills: Foundational understanding of soil systems or carbon cycling; familiarity with R or Python, including the ability to manipulate data and create visualizations.
