Position Description
As an Intern at Hensel Phelps, your primary objectives will be to gain a comprehensive understanding of the construction process and provide essential support to Field Engineers and Office Engineers in managing field operations and materials. This internship program offers a valuable opportunity for both the intern and Hensel Phelps to evaluate the potential for a long and successful career with the company post-graduation.
Position Qualifications
- Strong communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel-based templates), Prolog, Primavera, and AutoDesk Suite.
- Candidates are preferred to be pursuing a 4-year degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management.
Essential Duties
- Assisting with subcontractor management.
- Contributing to submittal review processes.
- Supporting RFI (Request for Information) development.
- Participating in layout and surveying activities.
- Assisting in the preparation of daily reports.
- Supporting quality control initiatives and adherence to our safety plan.
Physical Work Classification & Demands: Moderate Work
This role involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- The individual in this position will periodically engage in activities such as walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, reaching, stooping, reading/seeing, speaking, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and finger/typing. The frequency of these actions will vary based on workflow and office activity.
- Walking: Occasional movement within the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, and cabinets.
- Operating Office Equipment: Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery, including calculators, copy machines, phones, and printers.
- Communication: Frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders on various topics related to office administration.
- Cognitive Demands: Constantly computes, analyzes, and conceptualizes mathematical calculations and formulas.
- Sitting: Regularly sits in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.
- Reading: Constantly reads written communications and views mail submissions. Will also be required to read blueprints and take/verify field measurements.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
- Balancing: Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling, and to walk, stand, or crouch.
- Stooping: Bending the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
- Visual Acuity: Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
- Environmental Exposure: Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures. Frequently exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
