Canterbury Animal Hospital is a small boutique clinic that believes in the best medicine. We recently added a state-of-the-art dental suite, further enhancing our commitment to exceptional patient care. Located on the border between Portland Metro and the city of Tigard, we provide comprehensive veterinary services for a diverse clientele, seeing everything from pampered pets to working dogs.

Our clinic boasts a well-versed managing doctor who is dedicated to supporting our growing DVM team and providing invaluable mentorship to externs. We pride ourselves on fostering a collaborative and educational environment.

What You’ll Experience and Learn

As an extern, you will have the opportunity to work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain practical, hands-on experience in a variety of essential veterinary skills:

• Gathering thorough patient histories
• Performing comprehensive physical exams
• Creating effective treatment plans
• Utilizing various diagnostic tools and techniques
• Participating in dentistry services, from prophylaxis to advanced procedures
• Observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures (commensurate with skill level and comfort)
• Engaging in the medical management of a wide range of patients

In addition to practicing your clinical skills, student externs will have the invaluable opportunity to refine their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients, an essential aspect of veterinary practice.

Externship Program Details

• Duration: Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student availability and hospital schedules.
• Eligibility: All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
