Machine Learning Intern – Perception (Autonomous Driving) | Woven by Toyota
The Tone:
This is an internship at Woven by Toyota, located in Palo Alto, CA (Hybrid). Woven by Toyota is leading the transformation of Toyota into a mobility company, driven by a human-centric approach to expand what mobility means for society. This internship within the Perception team is critical for advancing state-of-the-art machine learning for autonomous driving systems, directly contributing to the bold goal of a world with zero accidents and enhanced well-being.

• Mission: To further push the boundaries of state-of-the-art perception systems for autonomous driving through machine learning model R&D, with a focus on real-world deployment.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Conduct Perception ML model R&D: Prototype, validate, and iterate on existing and new model architectures to push the boundaries of autonomous driving perception systems.
• Own model functionality development: Manage the end-to-end development of new model functionalities, from initial design and optimization to production platform validation and fine-tuning based on performance metrics.
• Ensure deployment readiness: Validate and refine models using real-world metrics and on-road performance data, with the ultimate goal of deploying your work onto prototype vehicles and experiencing its impact on public roads.
• Collaborate effectively: Work closely with other Perception team members, as well as with upstream and downstream customer teams, to integrate and advance the overall autonomy software stack.
• Present project outcomes: Produce a comprehensive final report and clearly present your project findings and impact to the autonomy team and other interested stakeholders.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD degree, with a strong research focus in Computer Vision, Robotics, or Deep Learning. This is an early career opportunity designed for practical industry experience.
• Experience: Proven ability to develop robust machine learning models and extensive experience applying deep learning techniques.
• Skills: Strong programming proficiency in Python and practical ML development experience using PyTorch. You should possess strong communication skills to convey complex concepts clearly and precisely, along with a “get things done” mentality.
• Bonus: A genuine passion for self-driving car technology and its potential to benefit humanity is highly valued.
