About Sterling’s Summer Internship Program
The Sterling Summer Intern Program is a paid 11-week program running from June 1 – August 14, 2026. This program offers interns hands-on work experience, allowing them to build upon knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom. Interns will work alongside industry leaders in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, contributing to the development of life-saving drugs globally. Throughout the 11 weeks, interns will engage in defined individual projects, learning GMP fundamentals and techniques from Sterling professionals. The program culminates in individual presentations to the Germantown Sterling Leadership team and site.
Your Responsibilities
This position requires alignment with Sterling’s core competencies and non-negotiables, in addition to expertise in functional competencies outlined in this profile. The Project Engineer Intern will be assigned projects at various points in their life cycle by the Sr. Project Engineer, with the following key expectations:
- Conceptual Project Development:
- Develop conceptual projects through meetings with project sponsors and area owners.
- Formulate solutions, including user requirements and plans.
- Determine project specifications and technology options.
- Present proposed solutions to the engineering team for approval.
- Capital Authorization Request Development:
- Prepare Capital Authorization Requests by gathering quotations and estimates from contractors and internal resources.
- Route the request for necessary approvals.
- Project Installation Execution:
- Manage project installation by overseeing contractors and internal resources, including engineering, operations, maintenance, and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) teams.
- Develop and execute Installation and Operational Qualification (IQ/OQ) plans.
- Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) Management:
- Walk down existing P&IDs and compare them to the as-installed conditions, red-lining the drawings to reflect the actual installation.
- Collaborate with the Project Engineer or independently update the P&IDs in AutoCAD based on the red-line revisions.
Requirements for the Role
- Education: Enrolled in a 4-year college or university, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Pharmaceutical Sciences, at least at a Sophomore level.
- Academic Standing: Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills required.
- Organizational Skills: Excellent detail orientation and organizational skills required.
- Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving and basic troubleshooting ability required.
- GMP Awareness: Awareness or prior work experience in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) environment preferred.
- Technical Proficiency: Competent with IT systems and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
- Software Skills: Candidates with AutoCAD experience preferred.
