Intern – Government SysOps | Akamai
The Tone:
This is a seasonal internship at Akamai, offering a flexible work location, which may be performed at your home and/or the local Akamai office in the country where the role is advertised. Akamai powers and protects life online by solving tough challenges, enabling leading companies worldwide to build, deliver, and secure their digital experiences with the world’s most distributed compute platform. This role on the GCDS SysOps team is crucial for maintaining and improving the tools used by GCDS Operators and Engineers globally. The intern will contribute directly to empowering teams with reliable tools that simplify deployment, enhance observability, and reduce operational overhead, making a meaningful difference within a fast-moving team environment.
The TL;DR

• Mission: Maintain and improve tools used by GCDS Operators and Engineers in support of Akamai, its customers, and the Internet worldwide, focusing on simplifying deployment, enhancing observability, and reducing operational overhead.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Development: Develop new features and bug fixes for containerized applications and network components on both backend and frontend, utilizing languages such as Python, React, Ruby, and Perl, and database systems like PostgreSQL.
• Data Visualization & Automation: Create dynamic visualizations on Grafana dashboards and automate data ingestion processes for comprehensive analysis of operational metrics using Python, Bash, and SQL.
• Tooling & Automation: Build and maintain internal tools to significantly improve the workflows of the Operations team by automating manual processes, including critical data transfer between networks, primarily using Python.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with SysOps teammates and other teams across the organization to ensure smooth operational workflows and tool integration.
• Continuous Learning: Actively engage in learning and picking up new skills relevant to the Akamai Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) through dedicated training and mentorship from experienced team members.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited institution.
• Experience: Availability to work 40 hours per week during the 12-week Summer Intern program, specifically from May 26th through August 14th, 2026.
• Skills: Proficiency or strong interest in developing with key technologies such as Python, React, Ruby, Perl, and SQL, along with experience using version control systems like Git or Perforce, and database systems like PostgreSQL.
• Bonus: Strong collaborative abilities when working with teammates and other cross-functional teams, a proactive approach to learning and quickly picking up new skills within the Akamai SDLC, and adaptability to develop within different frameworks utilized across various SysOps applications.
