About the Job: Communications & Marketing Intern

Are you a college student passionate about making a difference in the community? Do you have a knack for storytelling, content creation, and digital media? United Way of Northeast Florida is seeking a motivated and empathetic Communications & Marketing Intern to join our vibrant team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced non-profit environment, supporting critical efforts to transform Northeast Florida into a community of opportunity and hope for all.

As an intern, you will play a crucial role in developing and disseminating our message, engaging with the community, and supporting various marketing and communications initiatives. You’ll work directly from our state-of-the-art facility, collaborating with a dedicated team committed to creating a positive impact.

Key Responsibilities And Essential Functions:

  • Content Creation: Write compelling blog posts and assist with social media content development, including both short- and long-form video creation.
  • Video Production: Create, edit, and publish video content for social media, our website, events, and promotional campaigns.
  • Marketing & Design Support: Support the development of digital and print media, marketing collateral, advertisements, presentations, and promotional pieces as assigned. This includes assisting with graphic design, if applicable.
  • Digital Asset Management: Support photos/video file organization and tagging.
  • Website Management: Assist with website content management via WordPress.
  • Media Relations: Track and organize media clippings (including on our website) and update the media contact list as needed.
  • Event Support: Provide planning and logistical support for special events and submit event postings to community calendars.
  • Promotional Product Management: Assist with ordering, handling, and inventory of promotional products.
  • Team Collaboration: Participate in all-staff and team meetings, contributing to a cooperative and efficient environment.
  • Other Duties: Perform other such duties as may be assigned by the supervisory team, aligning with the core values and positive culture of United Way.

These internship responsibilities are the main emphasis of this position. As with every internship at United Way, it is not possible to define internships precisely. Should the need exist, every person in the organization will assist in any way necessary to assure an efficient and cooperative environment.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Motivation & Empathy: Applicant should possess a strong motivation to help people, a non-judgmental attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to empathize.
  • Education: Must be a college student pursuing a bachelor’s degree, with Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Business Administration/Management, or a related field preferred. High school degree is the required minimum level.
  • Experience: One year of experience in a related field is required (1-2 years of experience preferred).
  • Communication Skills: Proficiency in oral and written communication skills, with strong writing abilities and AP style knowledge.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Digital Skills (Entry-Level):
    • Entry-level website content management skills.
    • Entry-level photography and photo-editing skills.
  • Desired Skills (Plus, but not required):
    • Social media management skills.
    • Graphic design skills.
    • Videography and audio-capturing skills.
  • Work Ethic:
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule, given special events or other meetings.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computer equipment, phones, various software programs, and resource files.
    • Ability to work effectively under stress and maintain productivity and composure under pressure.
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and adapting readily to changes.
    • Ability to use good judgment and assessment techniques.
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
    • Effectively prioritizes work and establishes clear goals in coordination with a supervisor.
  • Compliance:
    • Ability to pass a background check.
    • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Values Alignment: Keep all activities in line with the core values and contribute to the positive culture of United Way of Northeast Florida. Actively participate in broader organizational activities and be a brand steward within the community, outside agencies, and/or programs to enhance United Way services.

Work Environment:

  • Location: As a matter of policy, interns may only work in our office (not remote). This may mean the internship is for three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).
