The Nurse Resident, Acute administers direct patient care within a hospital or inpatient/observation setting, focusing on acute care patients who require active treatment for injuries, illnesses, medical conditions, or post-intervention assessment and management.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
As a Nurse Resident, Acute, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Administering bedside patient care in a hospital or inpatient/observation setting under the supervision of a preceptor, leader, and/or charge nurse.
- Assessing patients’ needs and developing/revising individualized plans of care based on their needs and responses, and evaluating patients’ progress toward attaining expected outcomes.
- Respecting diversity by building respectful relationships with all team members and customers.
- Functioning as a dedicated advocate for patients and their families.
- Demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit/department.
- Serving as a preceptor, charge nurse, unit educator, and/or nurse clinician as applicable to the role’s progression and unit needs.
- Communicating and collaborating effectively with medical staff and the interdisciplinary team to plan and manage unit/department care.
- Serving as a role model for staff and actively supporting the hospital and nursing department’s goals and strategies.
- Demonstrating knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, assessing data reflective of the patient’s status, and interpreting necessary information to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs.
- Coordinating patient care for a defined group and delegating tasks appropriately to team members.
- Documenting patient care in a knowledgeable, skillful, and consistent manner, meeting all required and regulatory standards. This includes, but is not limited to, patient assessment, education, medication administration, treatments, and patient safety.
- Demonstrating competency in nursing skills and the use of patient care/unit equipment as defined by unit/department-specific requisite skills.
- Prioritizing patient care in an ongoing manner in accordance with Evidence-Based Practice Standards of Care.
- Practicing effective problem identification and resolution.
- Delegating tasks and duties to healthcare team members in accordance with the patient’s needs and the team member’s capabilities and qualifications.
- Communicating appropriate information regarding patient condition or unit concerns to other healthcare team members.
- Demonstrating caring practices by providing a compassionate and therapeutic environment for patients and their families.
- Demonstrating awareness of legal issues and patients’ rights.
- Collaborating with the education department and nursing leadership team to effectively transition and support new team members and/or students.
- Maintaining reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
- Maintaining compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
- Contributing to the knowledge and skills of others, and continuously improving the quality of healthcare practice and organizational outcomes.
- Participating in and may lead unit-level and/or organizational-level committees focused on nursing practice and performance improvement.
- Participating in departmental and organizational peer review, mentoring, and coaching regarding professional practice or role performance.
- Practicing efficient use of supplies and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Attending staff development in-services, department meetings, and/or nursing committee meetings.
- Partners with the nursing leadership team to identify professional development needs.
- Assumes responsibility for one’s own professional development and continuing education.
- Actively participates in and attends the Nurse Residency Program as appropriate to the role.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education and Training Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Authorized by the Florida Board of Nursing (BON) to practice as a graduate nurse and has received a “Graduate Nurse” letter.
- Authorized to take the NCLEX by the examination vendor.
- Meets all mandatory, developmental, and performance competency requirements for Orlando Health and the unit/department.
Licensure and Certification Requirements
- Must obtain Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) multistate RN license within three (3) months of placement in this job.
- Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.
- ACLS, NRP, PALS, TNCC may be required for certain areas/departments based on unit specificity.
