Job Description: Utility Person – Abingdon Quarry

Martin Marietta is seeking a highly motivated, safety-conscious, and dependable Utility Person to join our team at the Abingdon Quarry in Abingdon, VA. This cross-functional role involves a diverse range of responsibilities across plant maintenance, production, and equipment operation.

What to Expect:

As a Utility Person, you will be crucial in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our quarry. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Safely and efficiently performing cross-functional duties in plant maintenance, production, and equipment operation.
  • Greasing and lubricating plant equipment.
  • Maintaining plant housekeeping standards.
  • Operating various types of equipment.
  • Performing routine maintenance on plant and equipment.

Location & Hours:

  • Location: Abingdon Quarry, Abingdon, VA
  • Hours: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM, with weekends as necessary.

A Typical Day For A Utility Person May Include:

  • Performing preventative and routine maintenance on mobile and plant equipment, including cutting and welding under the guidance of the plant manager or other designated personnel.
  • Performing daily pre/post-shift inspections on equipment and maintaining maintenance logs.
  • Using a hand shovel and operating a skid steer, front end loader, and other tools to clean around plant equipment and to maintain roadways and parking areas.
  • Operating a water truck to limit airborne dust.
  • Participating in plant operations including production, loading and shipping, and quality control.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping in areas of responsibility and ensuring safe traffic flow throughout the site.
  • Operating plant-specific mobile equipment such as excavators and haul trucks in a safe manner as needed.
  • Operating an automated scale and related computer software program to generate customer tickets.
  • Administering site-specific training to visitors and ensuring site guidelines are followed.
  • Directing customers to the appropriate areas of the site.
  • Maintaining accurate records of aggregate tonnage and sales activities on a daily/weekly/monthly basis and preparing basic reports.
  • Communicating with other site personnel to ensure proper recording of sales activities and fulfillment of customer needs.
  • Answering customer calls and communicating pricing, product descriptions, and product availability.
  • Maintaining professionalism in all situations in the workplace and when working with customers.
  • Aiding in the training of co-workers as needed.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.

You May Be a Good Fit If You:

  • Possess a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience to perform the responsibilities associated with this position.
  • Have experience in the building materials industry (preferred).
