Position Purpose

Our food and food service delivery drivers play a critical role in the country’s food supply chain. They not only ensure customers’ products arrive on time and in good condition, but they are also the face of our company, building lasting relationships with our customers!

The Driver Trainee is an entry-level position designed for individuals to learn and/or gain experience in hauling freight and operating tractor-trailers. In this role, you will assist designated driver trainers with their deliveries and routes, while also developing professional communication skills to interact with customers, vendors, and co-workers. You will function as a team member, contributing to the department and organization’s success, and performing any assigned duties to best serve the company.

Responsibilities

As a Driver Trainee, your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Successfully completing the Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program as required.
  • Riding with and assisting the driver trainer in executing deliveries.
  • Performing all required safety checks (i.e., pre/post trip) including inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety standards.
  • Reporting all safety issues and/or required repairs promptly.
  • Following all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies.
  • Immediately reporting all safety hazards.
  • Inspecting trailers for properly loaded and secured freight.
  • Performing count checks of items and verifying customer invoices against loaded products.
  • Accurately and legibly completing all required paperwork associated with freight.
  • Moving tractors to the loading dock and attaching preloaded trailers as needed.
  • Driving to and delivering customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedules.
  • Unloading products from the trailer and transporting items into designated customer storage areas.
  • Performing damage control checks on items, scanning, and contacting supervisors about removing orders according to company policy.
  • Verifying delivery of items with the customer and obtaining proper signatures.
  • Collecting money (cash or checks) where required.
  • Loading customer returns onto the trailer and securing trailer doors.
  • Unloading damaged goods and customer returns, bringing them to driver check-in, and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Unloading all equipment, materials, and removing trash from trailers as required.
  • Completing daily record of hours of service and entering logs in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements.
  • Performing general housekeeping duties in the tractor, loading dock area, and keeping trailers clear and clean.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

We are looking for motivated individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Internal PFG Candidates: 1 year of service in good standing as outlined in the PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program, able to attain CDL Permit and DOT Health Card.
  • External Driver School Direct Hire: 0-6 months experience with a CDL Permit.
  • External Entry Level Hire: 6-12 months with a CDL Permit.
  • Valid CDL Permit or CDL A or B.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Meet all State licensing and/or certification requirements (where applicable).
  • Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the past 3 years.
  • Ability to pass a post-offer drug test.
  • Ability to pass a road test.
  • Attains or has a valid current DOT Health Card.
  • Able to hand-lift and utilize a two-wheeler, lift gate, and/or other equipment to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight throughout the shift; product generally ranges from approximately 60 to 90 pounds, depending on the location.
