Job Title: Community Recreation Program Assistant
Summary: This position plays a vital role in supporting the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Community Recreation program. The incumbent performs a variety of duties to ensure the successful planning, execution, and administration of a wide range of recreational activities and services for the community. This role requires strong customer service skills, organizational abilities, and a proactive approach to enhancing the quality of life for MWR patrons.
About the Role
As a Community Recreation Program Assistant, you will contribute to a vibrant and diverse MWR Community Recreation program. Your responsibilities may span across various areas, including:
- Special Events: Assisting in the planning, coordination, and execution of various community-wide events.
- Information & Resources: Providing comprehensive recreation information and resources to patrons.
- Command & Fleet Support: Supporting events for commands, visiting ships, and other fleet activities.
- Trips & Outings: Organizing and facilitating community trips, tours, and outings.
- Rental Equipment: Managing the rental of party and picnic equipment.
- Resale Tickets: Handling the sale of tickets for various attractions and events.
- Facility Management: Contributing to the management of recreational green spaces, bowling alleys, libraries, Liberty Centers, grab-n-go services, and movie screenings.
- Outdoor Recreation: Supporting activities related to outdoor recreation programs.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Operations
- Provides exceptional customer service, information, and support for all Community Recreation programs and activities.
- Verifies patron eligibility to ensure authorized use of recreation facilities, resources, and equipment.
- Offers detailed information about program offerings, activities, and schedules.
- Performs opening and closing procedures for facilities, ensuring readiness and security.
- Orders and restocks supplies, maintaining adequate inventory for operations.
- Prepares snack bar menu items or handles pre-packaged retail items.
Financial & Inventory Management
- Collects fees accurately from customers for ticket sales, retail items, rental items, classes, trips, and various other Community Recreation programs using Point of Sales (POS) and computer systems.
- Maintains accountability for the accuracy of daily sales transactions.
- Completes a Daily Activity Report (DAR) at the end of every shift, ensuring precise record-keeping.
- Performs regular inventory checks of various types of equipment, retail goods, supplies, and items with cash value, ensuring proper accountability.
- Maintains inventory controls and ensures equipment is properly maintained.
Program Administration & Development
- Assists in processing customer Internet registrations (e.g., Net Near You), initial logins, and event registrations.
- Checks Community Recreation equipment and resources in and out, ensuring proper documentation and collection of applicable rental fees.
- Conducts inspections of returned items, notifying supervisors or program leads of any damage or loss.
- Ensures all rental or check-out forms are properly completed and that reservation and check-out procedures are consistently followed.
- Assists in administering traditional and non-traditional workshops, clinics, and events in a variety of leisure and recreation skills, popular in the local area (e.g., camping, cycling, sailing, backpacking, canoeing, snow skiing, hiking, water sports).
- Provides recreation experiences through day and weekend trips related to leisure skill sets.
- Assists in the day-to-day administration of multiple assigned programs, including submission of event after-action reports, patronage data collection, and entering program data.
- Performs administrative duties using computer software programs to track resource inventories, patron usage/comments, and program standards metrics.
Marketing & Outreach
- Assists in the planning, coordinating, publicizing, marketing, and execution of MWR programs and special events.
- Performs entertainment and promotion scheduling.
- Assists in updating electronic and multi-media support tools as needed for marketing efforts.
- Seeks opportunities to promote MWR facilities and events through outreach initiatives on base.
- Promotes the use of recreational E-reading resources available through online MWR Library Program resources.
- Develops working partnerships with both on-base and off-base organizations (e.g., park districts, forest preserves, clubs, special interest groups) to support and benefit MWR programs.
- Performs community outreach to assist in developing contacts.
- Assists in the creation of professional proposals, execution of agreements, and follow-up activities.
- Researches and provides information and referral for a variety of recreational opportunities for individuals and families, both on and off base.
Facility & Equipment Management
- Initiates and follows up on maintenance trouble calls to ensure equipment and facility issues are resolved promptly.
- Provides support for Community Recreation event set-up and break-down.
- Adheres to NAVMED P-5010 sanitation requirements.
Administrative Support & Compliance
- Assists with recruitment, training, and scheduling of Community Recreation staff.
- Actively supports the command statement on adherence to EEO principles and policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned that pertain to the responsibilities of this position.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
- Must pass all applicable records and background checks.
- Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check; any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
- Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days of being placed in the position and maintain a valid state driver’s license to transport patrons off-base.
- Must be C.A.R.E trained, hold an Emergency First Responder (EFR) or CPR First Aid certification, and hold a current Food Handler certification upon being placed in the position OR be able to obtain these trainings/certifications within 90 days.
- Starting May 7, 2025, non-affiliated individuals requesting access will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to access CNRMA Installations.
Qualifications
Applicants must demonstrate experience and possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as they relate to this position. Please be clear and specific when describing your experience level and KSAs in your resume.
- A combination of experience related to customer service and/or recreation activity-based functions.
- Ability to organize, plan, and administer special events and entertainment activities.
- Must be able to work independently, make sound decisions, and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the goals, principles, techniques, and procedures used in organizing, planning, and conducting leisure time activities.
- Knowledge of the Navy MWR mission and the entire scope of Community Recreation activities, understanding their suitability for individuals, groups, ages, and interests.
- Knowledge of the functions, procedures, and operations of recreation activities.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, compile and organize data for reports, and perform research on recreation topics for dissemination to customers.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions precisely.
- Knowledge of computers, general office procedures, and print production.
Education
