Machine Learning Intern | Serco Inc.

The Tone:
This is an internship at Serco Inc., available throughout the U.S. The company’s Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) and its AI/ML Research and Development Team focus on developing innovative machine learning technologies to solve customer challenges and contribute to company growth. This role is crucial as the intern will join a team dedicated to addressing some of the nation’s most challenging problems, particularly for the U.S. military, through advanced AI and ML research and development efforts.

• Team: AI/ML Research and Development Team within the Advanced Technologies Group (ATG), working in a small (2-5 member) team guided by a Principal Research Scientist and technical leads.
• Mission: Develop innovative machine learning technologies to address some of the nation’s most challenging problems, particularly for the U.S. military.
• Tech Stack: Python, Java, DevOps principles, agile software development processes.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Project Assignment: Be assigned a significant project for ongoing U.S. military contracts, appropriately scoped for a summer intern.
• Solution Development: Work with members of the AI/ML team to frame problems, design solutions, develop code, and test and evaluate its effectiveness using Python and/or Java.
• Software Delivery: Package and deliver software for the target environment using standard DevOps principles.
• Collaboration: Collaborate with co-workers, leadership, and clients to understand problems, identify solutions, and demonstrate software.
• Documentation: Write technical software documentation and explain software design and implementation to co-workers, clients, and partners.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline from an accredited university. Ideal candidates are rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
• Experience: Working knowledge of Python and/or Java.
• Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong team player able to effectively contribute to project development.
• Bonus: Experience with, or course work in, Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence; effective communication and interpersonal skills; self-motivation with a strong work initiative and attention to detail.
