The Tone:
This is a temporary summer internship at Bon Secours, located across its four acute sites in Hampton Roads, Virginia, including Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth and Harbour View Medical Center in Suffolk. Bon Secours is a healthcare network dedicated to providing excellent, compassionate care, with a legacy spanning over 150 years. This role allows clinical nursing students to gain hands-on experience and exposure to patient care under the guidance of experienced Registered Nurses, contributing to the organization’s mission of extending care to all communities.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Support Registered Nurses: Under the direction of an RN, you will assist in the application of the nursing process to ensure quality patient care delivery.
• Develop Critical Thinking: Collaborate with Registered Nurses to enhance critical thinking skills within the context of patient care.
• Provide Basic Patient Care: Deliver fundamental patient care, including recording vital signs, assisting with personal care and hygiene, and aiding mobility.
• Act as Liaison: Serve as a communication link between patients and nurses, reporting any changes or concerns to the nursing staff.
• Perform Delegated Tasks: Complete specific tasks as delegated by the Registered Nurse, once competency for these tasks has been validated.

The Must-Haves
• Background: High School Diploma or GED (required); currently enrolled in a Registered Nurse (RN) nursing program and successfully completed program-specific educational requirements.
• Experience: Planned graduation date within 12 months of the summer program start.
• Skills: Ability to clearly communicate with other members of the healthcare team; ability to understand and follow directions; knowledge of patient and healthcare safety standards and regulations; understanding of infection prevention and transmission-based precautions; proficiency in patient data collection and documentation.
• Bonus: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training.
