Probation/Parole Intern | Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC)
The Tone:
This is an internship at the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC), located in Nashville, TN. TDOC is a multi-faceted agency dedicated to serving the public by operating secure prisons and providing effective community supervision. This role is crucial for learning how to rehabilitate offenders and guide them back into society while minimizing the likelihood of reoffending, directly contributing to public safety.
The TL;DR

• Mission: To learn and contribute to the effective management of offenders on probation or parole, aiming to reduce their risk of reoffending and enhance public safety.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Record Management: Prepare and maintain comprehensive offender records and reports.
• Report Writing: Draft narrative reports that detail investigation processes and identify criminal background information.
• Treatment Planning: Utilize offender information to determine proper steps for treatment and rehabilitation.
• Progress Evaluation: Evaluate offenders’ progress in accomplishing goals and complying with probation or parole conditions.
• Operational Observation: Observe staff conducting interviews with probationers and parolees, and witness relationships with court officials, law enforcement, and treatment agencies.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in social science, behavioral science, criminal justice, criminology, social work, or a related field, and currently enrolled as a Junior or higher.
• Experience: Enrollment in a program requiring academic credit for an internship, with successful completion of a background investigation and pre-employment drug screen.
• Skills: Understanding of risk and needs assessment instruments, ability to analyze criminal history and background information, interpersonal communication skills for diverse interactions, capability to learn and apply evidence-based practices in treatment, and skill in report preparation and record maintenance.
