Aviation Embedded Software Engineer | Leidos

The Tone:
This is an early career position at Leidos, located in Huntsville, North Alabama. Leidos is dedicated to making the world safer by providing critical engineering, scientific, and IT solutions to Defense Industry customers. This role is vital for developing robust embedded software for airborne systems, including tactical strike, sensors, CUAS, and UAS solutions, directly supporting key defense missions. The position focuses on both the creation of innovative software frameworks and the ongoing support and maintenance of these crucial products.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Design: Create conceptual designs across the full software stack for airborne systems and embedded software architectures.
• Implement: Write and review code, ensuring adherence to high-quality development principles.
• Test: Develop and execute unit tests, ensuring cohesive integration of software modules within subsystems and across distributed networks.
• Build: Create software tools, harnesses, and infrastructures to support fully integrated solutions.
• Communicate: Engage directly and frequently with customers, end users, internal stakeholders, and team members.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mathematics, or an equivalent technical degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
• Experience: 0+ years of relevant technical experience, with a proven track record of implementing software according to high quality development principles. Familiarity with configuration management and software quality engineering concepts is also required.
• Skills: Strong competency in software development using C, C++, Java, or Python. Working knowledge of inter-process communication, multithreaded programming, memory management, and experience writing unit and integration tests with unit test frameworks. Strong analytical, process improvement, teamwork, and communication skills are essential.
• Bonus: Experience working under a disciplined software engineering process. Familiarity with embedded software concepts such as device drivers, board support packages, boot loaders, Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS), and Hardware Description Language (HDL). Knowledge of hardware like microcontrollers, single board computers, common peripheral interfaces, and hardware test equipment. A current Secret Security Clearance is preferred.
