Machine Learning Intern | Serco Inc.

The Tone:
This is a summer internship opportunity at Serco Inc., with positions available across the U.S. Serco’s Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) develops advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions. This team focuses on solving complex national security problems for the U.S. military. The intern role is crucial for contributing to innovative R&D efforts that augment or replace human tasks and workflows, directly impacting vital services and defense capabilities.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Seasonal (Summer), Full-time (up to 40 hours/week)
• Location: U.S. (Various Locations)
• Team: AI/ML Research and Development Team within the Advanced Technologies Group (ATG), guided by the Principal Research Scientist and technical leads.
• Mission: Develop and deliver innovative machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies to address some of the U.S. military’s most challenging problems.
• Tech Stack: Python, Java

What You’ll Actually Do
• Project Contribution: Contribute to a significant project that directly supports Serco’s ongoing contracts with the U.S. military, potentially working alongside other interns on a well-defined scope for the summer.
• Solution Development: Collaborate closely with AI/ML research scientists and software engineers to frame technical problems, design effective solutions, develop the necessary code (primarily in Python and/or Java), and rigorously test and evaluate its effectiveness.
• Software Delivery: Package developed software and prepare it for deployment in the target environment, adhering to standard DevOps principles for efficient delivery.
• Client Engagement: Work with co-workers, leadership, and external clients to deeply understand their specific challenges, identify viable technical solutions, and present compelling demonstrations of developed software.
• Technical Documentation: Produce clear and comprehensive technical software documentation, effectively explaining your software design and implementation details to co-workers, clients, and partners.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related STEM discipline from an accredited university. Ideal candidates are rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
• Experience: Demonstrated working knowledge of Python and/or Java for software development. Ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screen is required for this position.
• Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical discussions and documentation. Strong teamwork and collaborative skills to effectively contribute to project development.
• Bonus: Prior experience with, or relevant coursework in, Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence. Strong interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration. Self-motivated with a proactive work initiative and keen attention to detail.
