Serco offers an exciting internship opportunity within its Advanced Technologies Group (ATG). The ATG’s AI/ML Research and Development Team is dedicated to developing innovative machine learning technologies that address customer challenges and contribute to company growth.

As a Machine Learning Intern, you will join a dynamic team of research scientists and software engineers, contributing to the development of cutting-edge machine learning technologies designed to tackle some of the nation’s most challenging problems. This role is ideal for individuals who are innovative and driven by complex technical challenges.

Our team focuses on a wide range of capabilities, primarily in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, aiming to augment or replace human tasks and workflows. We specialize in areas such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), including Large Language Models (LLMs), computer vision technologies, operational AI for situational awareness and command and control, data fusion, and the development of innovative user interface/user experience (UI/UX) systems for effective human-machine teaming.

This is a summer internship opportunity available throughout 2026 in the U.S., offering up to 40 hours per week, with a flexible working schedule determined with your manager.

The Internship Experience

Over the course of the summer, you will be an integral part of a small team (2-5 members) that collaborates closely with our customers and other teams to deliver innovative systems to the U.S. military. We are seeking computer science, engineering, or other science majors eager to contribute to our research & development efforts, especially in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Your internship will be guided by a Principal Research Scientist and other technical leads on our team.

In This Role, You Will:

  • Be assigned a project significant to our ongoing contracts with the U.S. military, appropriately scoped for a summer intern. The project may be a group project with other interns.
  • Work with members of the AI/ML team to frame the problem, design the solution, develop the code to implement it, and test and evaluate its effectiveness. Software will likely be written in Python and/or Java.
  • Package and deliver software for the target environment using standard DevOps principles.
  • Collaborate with co-workers, leadership, and clients to understand client problems, identify solutions, and demonstrate software solutions.
  • Participate in internal and client-defined agile software development processes.
  • Write technical software documentation and explain your software design and implementation to co-workers, clients, and partners.

To Be Successful In This Role, You Will Have:

  • A High School Diploma/GED.
  • Be currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline from an accredited university.
  • Ideal candidates are rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
  • A working knowledge of Python and/or Java.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be a strong team player who can effectively contribute to project development.
  • This position is contingent upon your ability to pass a background check and drug screen.

Additional Desired Experience And Skills:

  • Experience with, or coursework in, Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work initiative and attention to detail.

The actual base salary for this position will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the scope of the role, relevant experience, job-related knowledge, education and training, key skills, and geographic market considerations. For roles available in multiple states, the range may vary to reflect differences in local labor markets. In addition to base salary, eligible positions may include other forms of compensation such as annual bonuses or long-term incentive opportunities.
