2026 Summer Engineering Internship / Co-Op | Tampa Electric Company

The Tone:
This is a summer engineering internship/co-op at Tampa Electric Company, located in Tampa, Florida. TECO Energy is an energy company focused on providing critical services to the community, specifically through the coordination and design of its distribution system. This role offers college students the chance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world projects, contributing to new construction and maintenance of the electrical distribution network and gaining a head start on their future career.

• Mission: Coordinate and design Tampa Electric Company’s (TEC) distribution system, including new construction and maintenance projects, by establishing relationships with customers and local agencies to determine service requirements.
• Tech Stack: Work Management System (WMS), geographical information system (GIS)

What You’ll Actually Do
• Project Coordination: Meet with customers and their agents to conduct needs and feasibility assessments for multiple construction projects, managing schedules and required completion dates, and communicating updates to all involved entities, including TEC Planning & Scheduling, Field Construction, and Operations.
• System Design & Analysis: Perform detailed analysis to determine economical and reliable solutions for customers and the TEC distribution system, which includes calculating and analyzing customer load, designing facility locations, and adhering to NESC, TEC specifications, and Florida Administrative Code.
• GIS Integration & Work Management: Utilize TEC’s geographical information system (GIS) to design proposed and update existing electrical features, establishing correct electrical connectivity, supporting structures, and compatible units for materials and labor, while creating and managing work requests (WR) in the Work Management System (WMS).
• Construction Documentation & Permitting: Produce and oversee the production of comprehensive construction prints for Field Construction, Operations, and/or Contractors, ensuring accurate identification of existing and proposed equipment and third-party infrastructure, and preparing GIS prints for regulatory agency permits.
• Field Assessment & Troubleshooting: Access and inspect energized equipment, install current/voltage recording devices for troubleshooting, investigate and resolve customer voltage complaints using various instruments and engineering practices, and visually/physically examine TEC distribution facilities for replacement or upgrade needs.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Enrolled as a Junior or Senior undergraduate, or a graduate-level student, in an accredited university program in a related engineering discipline.
• Experience: Eagerness to apply classroom knowledge to real-world, project-based work, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to meaningful projects.
• Skills: Foundational understanding of electrical distribution principles, analytical abilities for engineering calculations and problem-solving, strong communication and coordination skills for managing projects and stakeholders, and ability to interpret and create technical drawings.
• Bonus: Enrollment in the university’s co-op program (proof of enrollment required).
