Accounting Clerk | Sales Tax Consulting Firm

The Tone:
This is a full-time office role at a leading sales tax consulting firm, known for its dedication to helping businesses navigate sales tax complexities. The company specializes in providing comprehensive sales & use tax solutions and expertise, committed to optimizing compliance and maximizing tax savings for clients. This Accounting Clerk role is critical for meticulously preparing, reviewing, and maintaining clients’ financial records specifically related to sales tax. The successful candidate will ensure the timely and accurate preparation, filing, and payment of sales tax returns across the U.S. and Canada, embodying a genuine passion for client satisfaction and a drive for excellence within a family-run business that values work-life balance.

The TL;DR
• Role: Full Time
• Type: In-office, onsite 5x per week, with potential for partial remote work after proven success.
• Location: In-person
• Pay: $20.00–$22.50 hourly
• Mission: To ensure timely and accurate preparation, filing, and payment of clients’ sales tax returns across the U.S. and Canada by meticulously managing financial records.
• Tech Stack: QuickBooks Online, Shopify, WooCommerce, NetSuite, Avalara, TaxJar, Microsoft Excel

What You’ll Actually Do
• Data Gathering: Collect clients’ sales data information from various accounting and tax software programs such as QuickBooks Online, Shopify, WooCommerce, NetSuite, Avalara, and TaxJar.
• Data Review: Thoroughly review and confirm the accuracy of clients’ sales data to ensure compliance and proper reporting.
• Return Preparation: Prepare drafts of clients’ sales tax returns for monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual filings, ensuring all regulatory requirements are met for U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions.
• Client Communication: Communicate proactively with clients to receive necessary approvals for completing filings and facilitating the payment of all pending balances due.
• Client Advisory: Provide valuable feedback to clients on sales tax best practices, changes in tax laws, and other pertinent tax-related and customer service topics.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, finance, or a related field, indicating a strong foundation in financial principles and practices.
• Experience: Proven track record of success in filing tax returns, demonstrating precision and reliability in managing financial compliance tasks.
• Skills: Expertise in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and record keeping. Familiarity with a variety of accounting and tax software programs. Extreme attention to detail for ensuring accuracy in financial records and tax filings. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex tax matters and interface with clients and state agencies. Strong analytical problem-solving abilities to identify client pain points and provide tailored solutions. Effective time management and prioritization skills to meet critical monthly filing deadlines.
• Bonus: Prior experience with filing sales tax returns across the U.S. and Canada is a plus, but not strictly required for candidates who are quick learners and receptive to constructive feedback.
