Legal Intern | Security Benefit
The Tone:
This is an eight-week internship at Security Benefit, located in Topeka, Kansas, with hybrid work flexibility. Security Benefit is a leader in the U.S. retirement market, managing over $55 billion in assets and helping customers go “To and Through Retirement®.” This role offers a first-year law student the chance to gain broad exposure to the legal, financial, and operational dimensions of a sophisticated annuity insurance company. You will contribute to a team focused on driving the future of the U.S. retirement industry.

• Mission: To provide a motivated first-year law student with comprehensive exposure to the legal, financial, and operational aspects of a leading annuity insurance company.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Collaborate: Work as an integral part of a collaborative, agile team, engaging with professionals across multiple departments.
• Understand: Develop a well-rounded understanding of how a sophisticated insurance enterprise operates, encompassing annuity products, investment operations, and insurance regulation.
• Experience: Gain hands-on exposure to the legal and regulatory environment specific to a major insurance and retirement company.
• Present: Have the opportunity to present your work and findings directly to company leadership.
• Learn: Receive mentorship from experienced in-house attorneys, compliance officers, and finance professionals, building a foundation for a career in insurance law or financial services.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Early Career. Completion of your first year (1L) at an ABA-accredited law school by the start of the internship. Demonstrated interest in business, finance, or regulatory law.
• Experience: Not specified.
• Skills: Excellent research, writing, and communication skills; intellectual curiosity and the ability to manage multiple assignments across different teams.
• Bonus: Prior experience in financial services, insurance, or a related field.
