Summer Recruitment – Actuarial Intern | CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
The Tone:
This is a year-round internship at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, located in MD/DC/VA. CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield provides health insurance services, and this role offers students a chance to gain hands-on experience in actuarial Medicare work. The position helps students develop a deep understanding of the healthcare industry and apply academic knowledge in a business environment. Interns will also foster valuable connections across various levels of management within the organization.

• Mission: To support the actuarial team by applying analytical skills to Medicare work and contributing to financial modeling and forecasting efforts.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Data Analysis: Gather data from various internal and external sources, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods.
• Presentation of Findings: Apply analytical skills to present findings effectively through pivot tables, visualizations, and narrative summaries.
• Model Maintenance: Assist in the updating of the Medicare Advantage pricing model.
• Financial Forecasting: Contribute to Medicare Advantage financial forecasting efforts.
• Trend Analysis: Aid in the preparation of accurate and timely trend analyses.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited College or University, specifically a rising Senior Undergraduate student or a Master’s level student graduating in May 2027. Targeted majors include Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance, or related degrees, with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above.
• Experience: No specific prior work experience required, but a strong desire to apply academic knowledge in a business environment and gain hands-on actuarial experience is essential.
• Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities, proficiency in Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access), and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively with a positive attitude.
• Bonus: Passage of one and/or two SOA (Society of Actuaries) actuarial exams is strongly preferred, and experience using SQL or Python is highly desirable.
