Mechanical Engineering Intern or Co-op | Boston Dynamics

The Tone:
This is an internship or co-op position at Boston Dynamics, located in Waltham, MA. Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges and developing awe-inspiring machines. The company is becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications, warehouse logistics, and general-purpose labor. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern or Co-op on the Atlas program, you will play a critical role in designing, prototyping, and validating mechanical components and assemblies for these advanced robotic systems.

The TL;DR

• Team: Atlas Platform Mechanical team
• Mission: Design, build, and validate mechanical parts and assemblies to improve the Atlas robot platform.
• Tech Stack: Catia CAD, Solidworks, FEA, CFD

What You’ll Actually Do
• Design: Design and support complex robotic systems by working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers.
• Test: Plan and perform comprehensive verification and validation testing on both prototype and production systems to ensure performance.
• Improve: Design and develop new, novel features for existing products, troubleshoot issues, and perform root cause failure analysis to implement corrective actions.
• Document: Design and release mechanical parts and assemblies using Catia CAD software, and develop and maintain critical product support documentation, including bills of material (BOMs) and detailed drawings.
• Analyze: Support system design analyses, including assessments for reliability, Design for Manufacturing (DFM) / Design for Assembly (DFA), and cost-reduction efforts.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current student enrolled in a Bachelor Degree program in Mechanical Engineering or Robotics Engineering.
• Experience: Demonstrated passion for robotics and mechanical design. Proven experience designing components and assemblies using 3D CAD tools such as Solidworks or CATIA, including performing simulations like FEA/CFD and generating detailed 2D drawings. Practical, hands-on ability to independently fabricate, assemble, and troubleshoot components and systems.
• Skills: High level of technical writing proficiency for creating specifications, test plans, reports, and white papers. Excellent communication and organizational skills for effective team collaboration.
• Bonus: Experience with programming tools like Python, LabView, or MATLAB. Familiarity with a range of manufacturing processes including injection molding, castings, extrusions, sheet metal, weldments, and compression molding. Exposure to ASME drafting standards, specifically GD&T (Y14.5-2018). Experience working with dynamic systems incorporating sensors, actuators, and mechanisms. Demonstrated internship or other experience designing and developing mechanical parts and assemblies for product applications (consumer, industrial, medical).
