Job Description
Job Summary: Graduate Nurse Internship – Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
This is a 12-week internship program specifically designed to prepare new Graduate Nurses for a Registered Nurse position on a general care pediatric unit, with a focus on the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit (7 East Mott). This posting aims to fill two Graduate Nurse Internship positions, with an anticipated start date in Summer of 2026.
Program Structure & Commitment
- Duration: A structured 12-week internship program.
- Training: Orientation combines comprehensive educational sessions (both group and unit-based settings) and hands-on precepted bedside clinical experience, which will occur on the onboarding unit.
- Post-Internship Commitment: Candidates hired through this internship program are required to commit to a two (2) year employment term.
- Work Hours: A minimum of 30 hours/week (0.75 FTR) is required post-internship. Flexibility for hours to range from 32-40 hours per week will be available during the program.
Unit Description: 7 East Mott (Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)
7 East is a highly specialized 32-bed unit located within C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, dedicated to pediatric Hematology/Oncology. The unit provides advanced care for a diverse and vulnerable patient population:
- Patient Age Range: From newborn infants to young adults.
- Diagnoses Treated:
- Hematological Disorders: Including chronic granulomatous disease, sickle cell anemia, and other complex blood disorders.
- Oncological Disorders: Such as leukemia, lymphoma, and various solid tumors.
- Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program: 7 East Mott houses a robust Bone Marrow Transplant program, performing 40-50 autologous, cord, allogenic, and unrelated transplants annually.
- Environmental Features: All rooms are HEPA-filtered private rooms, and some include positive pressure capabilities, designed to provide maximum protection for immunocompromised patients.
Expectations of Position
- Successful candidates will be required to meet the requirements of the Commission on Cancer Certification within the triannual certification window, proportionate to their hire or transfer date to the oncology area. Detailed guidance will be provided by leadership.

- Hourly Range for Registered Nurses: $41.78 – $64.81 / hour
- Generous Shift Differentials:
- Evening Shift: $3.00 / hour
- Night Shift: $4.00 / hour

- Night Shift Weekend: $6.90 / hour

Nursing Specific Information
- Salary & Nursing Framework Level: This UMPNC RN posting is initially advertised as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and corresponding salary will be determined at the time of hire (framework levels range from A to F).
- Union Affiliation: This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which dictates wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Required Qualifications*
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet or will have met all the following essential qualifications prior to the start date of employment:
- Must be a Graduate Nurse or newly licensed in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse.
- The candidate must not have yet practiced as a Registered Nurse.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX is mandatory prior to the start date of the nurse internship.
- Applicants must be available and able to start in Summer of 2026.
- Ability to perform physically demanding duties including standing, walking, positioning, pulling, and lifting heavy patients and objects for extended periods.
- Resume Required: A complete and accurate resume must be attached for full consideration.
Desired Qualifications*
Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following qualities and experiences:
- Experience as an Extern or Inpatient Tech, with Pediatrics preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Highly motivated and organized individual.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Takes initiative in seeking professional growth and development.
- Experience working with children and youth.
- Demonstrates expertise in communication and problem-solving skills, as evidenced by interviews, documentation, writing skills, and professional references.

- Weekend Requirement: Up to 50%

- Note: All new employees will be expected to float to designated unit(s) during times of low census.
