Data Science Intern

The City of Fort Worth, one of the fastest-growing large cities in the U.S., is seeking a Data Science Intern to join the Data Analytics division of FWLab. This involves predictive modeling, statistical analysis, and advanced visualizations to enhance departments’ capacity to deliver for the people of Fort Worth. The division’s findings are crucial for driving decision-making excellence, improving process efficiency, and promoting organizational awareness.

  • Pay Range: $20.00/hr.

  • Workdays & Hours: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm; Some evening/weekend work required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current student or recently graduated within the last 6 months of application, or working towards a specialization in a vocational field.
  • No previous experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with some form of data visualization tooling (Power BI, Tableau).
  • Prior probability and statistics knowledge.
  • Skill in a high-level programming language (Python, R, Julia).
  • Familiarity with data manipulation / ML libraries (pandas, numpy, sklearn, etc.).

Data Analytics Intern Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Curiosity: Asking great, simple questions is more important than sounding like an expert.
  • Collaborate with departments to define problem spaces.
  • Break down complex business problems into component parts using abstract reasoning / quantitative thinking and document those processes.
  • Develop tests to interrogate real-world systems.
  • Creative and practical approach to data collection from diverse databases and sources.
  • Manipulate data with Power BI, Excel, or high-level programming languages like Python, if preferred.
  • Analyze data using regressions, Bayesian, time series, etc., to develop mechanistic understanding of real-world systems.
  • Create data visualizations based on insights from analysis and communicate insights to stakeholders through reports, presentations, interactive dashboards, etc.

Working Conditions and Physical Demand

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking, and repetitive motions.

Sedentary Work: Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting more of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Background Check

Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position:

  • Felony Convictions
  • Felony Deferred Adjudication
  • Class A Misdemeanor Conviction
  • Class B Misdemeanor Convictions in the last 10 years
  • Class A Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication
  • Class B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication in the last 10 years
  • An Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor)
  • ALL Family Violence Convictions regardless of class
