Detailed Job Description: School to Work – Industrial Engineering
Join our team at Cummins Inc., a global power leader, as a School To Work (STW) specializing in Industrial Engineering for Columbus Fuel Systems. This on-site role offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and make a tangible impact within a manufacturing environment.
As a School To Work student, you will be an integral part of our Manufacturing team, contributing directly to projects that enhance efficiency, safety, and productivity. This role is perfect for an enthusiastic, action-oriented individual with a basic understanding of Industrial Engineering principles who is eager to learn and collaborate.
Key Responsibilities & Impact:
In this role, you will:
- Support Manufacturing Operations: Assist with critical tasks such as equipment, fixture, and tool setup and debugging processes.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with various departments including Maintenance, Safety, Operations, Materials, and Quality to support diverse manufacturing projects and achieve shared objectives.
- Effective Communication: Practice and develop clear, audience-specific communication skills to improve understanding, alignment, and decision-making across teams.
- Health & Safety Advocacy: Model proactive safety behaviors, learn to identify potential hazards, and support initiatives aimed at strengthening an injury-free, interdependent safety culture.
- Line Balancing Optimization: Gain practical experience in Value Stream Mapping and process flow charting. You will analyze work activities to redistribute tasks, improve operating time, and ensure processes efficiently adapt to changing customer demands.
- Work Measurement and Cycle Time Capture: Learn to break down manufacturing processes into measurable elements to identify waste, rebalance workloads, and improve overall process flow and productivity. A significant part of your role will involve conducting cycle time studies to update machine routings for 2026.

Qualifications & Requirements:
- Must be a talented school to work student.
- Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of hiring.
- STW employees are restricted to working no more than 19 hours weekly.
- This role is 100% On-Site. Due to the operational nature and specific job duties, work is required to be completed in person.
