Position Overview & Goals
The primary goals for interns at Hensel Phelps are to:
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of the construction process.
- Assist Field Engineers and Office Engineers in field and materials management.
This internship program serves as an extended opportunity for both the intern and Hensel Phelps to evaluate mutual fit for a long and successful career with the company after graduation.
Position Qualifications
- Strong communication skills.
- Computer software proficiency: Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel based templates), Prolog, Primavera, and AutoDesk Suite.
- Candidates are preferred to be pursuing a 4-year degree in Civil, Structural, Architecture or Construction Management.
Essential Duties
As an intern, you will contribute to various critical aspects of construction projects, including:
- Subcontractor Management
- Submittal review skills
- RFI (Request for Information) development
- Layout / surveying
- Daily reports
- Quality control and support of our safety plan
Physical Work Classification & Demands
This position is classified as Moderate Work, requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
The individual in this position will frequently engage in the following physical activities:
- Movement: Periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, push, pull, lift, stand. Occasionally needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc.
- Operation: Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery (calculator, copy machine, phone, computer, printer).
- Communication: Frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders on various topics related to office administration.
- Cognitive: Constantly computes, analyzes, and conceptualizes mathematical calculations and formulas.
- Posture: Regularly sits in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.
- Vision: Constantly reads written communications and views mail submissions. Will also need to read blueprints and take/verify field measurements. Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
- Environmental Exposure: Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures. Frequently exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
- Specific Movements:
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding and ramps at various heights.
- Balancing: Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling and to walk, stand or crouch.
- Stooping: Bending the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
