Job Description
About Battelle & The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON)
Battelle stands as a global leader in applied science and technology development, renowned for its ability to deliver innovative solutions where others cannot. We are committed to conducting cutting-edge research and development, managing critical national laboratories, designing and manufacturing advanced products, and providing essential services to a diverse clientele, from multi-national corporations and agile start-ups to government agencies.
We believe in the power of diverse perspectives and experiences, valuing the unique contributions each individual brings. We extend a warm welcome to all qualified applicants to join our mission-driven team.
The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a monumental continental-scale observation facility, generously funded by the National Science Foundation and expertly operated by Battelle. The NEON program is meticulously designed to gather comprehensive, long-term, and open-access ecological data. This invaluable data helps researchers profoundly understand the evolving dynamics of U.S. ecosystems, spanning an incredible range from vital freshwater systems like streams, rivers, and lakes, to diverse terrestrial landscapes encompassing tropical forests, arid deserts, and frigid tundra (learn more at neonscience.org). Our success hinges on the dedication of our people who tirelessly collect observational data and samples, meticulously monitor automated instrumented systems gathering terrestrial and aquatic data, and skillfully operate our airborne observation platform to capture remote sensing data of regional landscapes and vegetation.
Job Title: Field Ecology Intern
Location: Onsite in Land O’Lakes, WI
Internship Duration: July 2026 – October 2026
The Great Lakes Domain (Domain 05)
Within the critical Great Lakes Domain (Domain 05), our team is dedicated to collecting essential data across northern hardwood forests and lakes. This work takes place in both actively managed and minimally managed landscapes throughout northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The comprehensive data we collect is instrumental in helping researchers decipher how multifaceted environmental pressures—including a changing climate, the proliferation of invasive species, and various land management practices like forestry—will ultimately impact the biodiversity and biogeochemistry of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems within the iconic Great Lakes region. Our NEON sites in the Great Lakes Domain are expertly managed from our Land O’ Lakes, WI office, strategically located at the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDERC).
Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
As a Field Ecology Intern, you will be an integral part of our data collection efforts, performing seasonal and periodic sampling of physical, chemical, and biological data. This dynamic role requires you to exercise sound judgment and strong decision-making abilities to interpret and faithfully execute protocol requirements across one or multiple field sites, depending on the specific location and needs. You may be assigned an area of primary responsibility, allowing you to specialize in areas such as:
- Botany: Plant identification, phenology, biomass collection.
- Soils: Soil sampling, characterization, and analysis.
- Entomology: Insect trapping and identification.
- Mammalogy: Small mammal trapping and processing (excluding Puerto Rico and Hawaii).
- Limnology: Aquatic sampling (water chemistry, algae, zooplankton, aquatic plants – excluding Hawaii).
- Instrumentation: Monitoring and basic maintenance of automated sensor systems.
Alternatively, you may be assigned multiple areas of responsibility, serving as a valuable “generalist” across various data collection efforts.
Your work will encompass a wide array of field observations and collections, utilizing approximately 30 different standardized protocols. Additionally, you may contribute to NEON Research Support Services projects, which involve collaborating with external Principal Investigators and require flexible scheduling based on local ecosystem and field conditions.
Core Responsibilities Include:
- Executing both field and lab assignments with precision and adaptability across diverse conditions, including varied weather, challenging terrain, and assigned biomes.
- Rigidly adhering to established, standardized field procedures for the collection of samples.
- Accurately recording data from sample collections using handheld tablets, computers, and other digital tools.
- Diligently preparing and maintaining field equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Meticulously processing and preparing samples for shipment to external laboratories.
- Navigating proficiently to remote field sites and specific sampling locations using GPS and maps.
- Consistently reporting activities and completed work in strict accordance with established protocols.
- Strictly observing and upholding all safety policies and procedures, prioritizing personal and team safety.
- Proactively identifying and reporting any issues encountered during procedure implementation and actively coordinating towards their resolution.
- Assisting with routine administrative duties, contributing to special projects, including collaborations with external Principal Investigators through Research Support Services, and performing other duties as assigned to support NEON operations.
Note: Individuals are responsible for securing their own housing and transportation to the primary work location in Land O’Lakes, WI.
Physical Demands & Challenging Work Environment
This role demands a high level of physical endurance and resilience. The work routinely involves extensive walking, rigorous hiking across uneven terrain, prolonged standing, repetitive bending, and kneeling. You must be capable of regularly lifting and carrying heavy items, specialized equipment, and field packs weighing up to 40 pounds.
Field work will expose you to a wide spectrum of environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather (rain, snow, heat, cold), rough and highly variable terrain. You will encounter stinging and biting insects, disease-carrying ticks, toxic plants such as poison ivy, and potential wildlife hazards. Instrument maintenance may require performing work on tall instrument towers, ranging in height from 66 feet to 123 feet, which includes ascending and descending multiple flights of stairs. Driving off-road in 4WD vehicles is an essential and frequent requirement for accessing most field sites.
Work Schedule and Travel Expectations
The NEON program operates within a dynamic work environment where schedules are variable and determined at the manager’s discretion. Generally, employees are expected to work 40 hours per week, with typical workdays ranging from 8-10 hours per day. It is important to note that workdays may occasionally extend to 12+ hours per day, potentially including split shifts (starting before dawn and/or ending after dusk) and weekend work to meet critical data collection deadlines. The role maintains a demanding ratio of approximately 75% field work to 25% office and lab duties.
Working over 40 hours a week may be required as needed, and overtime will be compensated accordingly. Additionally, frequent overnight travel (e.g., approximately 2 times per month for 2-4 nights) is a mandatory component of this position.
Key Qualifications
To thrive in this challenging yet rewarding role, candidates should possess the following:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate or advanced graduate degree in ecology, forestry, environmental science, or a closely related scientific field.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and proficiently perform procedures and methods that may extend beyond initial primary responsibilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, coupled with strong interpersonal abilities. The capacity to follow written and verbal instructions precisely is paramount.
- Effective problem-solving skills and the organizational acumen to manage and execute multiple activities and priorities simultaneously.
- A proactive approach to identifying and resolving potential resource conflicts.
- An exceptionally high level of attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
- The ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as an integral part of a team.
- A demonstrated optimistic outlook even in adverse conditions, alongside sound judgment in identifying, mitigating, and proactively avoiding hazards.
- The insight to identify exemplary practices and areas for continuous improvement within team performance.
- A valid U.S. Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record pertinent to the requirements of the position.
- Ability to successfully pass comprehensive background checks and pre-employment drug testing.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
