Internship At a Glance
- Location: Immerse yourself in our innovative culture! This role requires a commitment of 4 days in-office per week at our state-of-the-art facility in Garden Grove, CA.
- Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hours a week), offering a comprehensive and engaging work experience.
- Duration: Choose between two structured 10-11 week programs:
- May 26 to August 7
- June 22 to August 28
- Relocation Support: To support your transition, a $1,000 relocation stipend is available for interns currently residing more than 50 miles from Garden Grove, CA.
- Compensation: We offer a competitive hourly rate of $25-35 USD per hour, recognizing the value of your contributions.
Job Summary
Harbinger Motors is actively seeking a bright and motivated Controls Intern to play a pivotal role in the development of cutting-edge vehicle control systems for our electric medium-duty trucks. This position offers a unique opportunity to directly contribute to the design, development, and validation of sophisticated algorithms for vehicle system control. You will be instrumental in bringing to life a vehicle product that represents a significant technological leap forward in the commercial EV space.
Job Responsibilities
As a Controls Intern, you will engage in a dynamic range of tasks essential to the advancement of our EV control systems:
- Software Algorithm Development: Craft intricate software algorithms utilizing industry-standard tools like Simulink & Stateflow.
- Physical System Modeling: Create realistic physical models in SimScape to accurately represent various vehicle components and systems.
- Simulation-Based Validation: Conduct thorough Model-In-The-Loop (MIL) simulation tests to rigorously validate the performance and robustness of control algorithms.
- Automated Code Generation: Build high-quality algorithm code using advanced code generation tools to transition from model to implementation.
- Debugging and Root-Cause Analysis: Proactively debug and resolve issues identified in both simulation testing and critical in-vehicle testing environments.
- Vehicle Communication Diagnostics: Utilize specialized vehicle communication instrumentation to effectively root-cause complex issues encountered during development and testing.
- Hands-On Performance Evaluation: Assist with practical, hands-on evaluation of control system performance on bench setups and directly within our test vehicles.
- Requirements Engineering: Contribute to the authoring of detailed Software Requirements and the decomposition of broader system requirements.
- Fault Detection Development: Design and implement robust fault detection mechanisms for critical events such as loss of communication or I/O failures.
- Fail-Safe Strategy Design: Develop sophisticated fail-safe strategies for algorithms, ensuring vehicle safety and operational integrity in response to detected faults.
- Automation Scripting: Develop and enhance automation scripts for CI/CD pipelines, focusing on generating Simulink model metrics and improving development efficiency.
Required Skills
We are looking for candidates who possess the following qualifications:
- MATLAB / Simulink Expertise: Proven experience with MATLAB / Simulink is absolutely required for this role.
- Source Control Proficiency: Familiarity and experience with source control systems such as git, svn, or mercurial is required.
- EV/Hybrid Systems Knowledge (Preferred): A strong understanding of hybrid and/or electric vehicle systems and components is highly preferred.
- CAN Monitoring Tools (Preferred): Experience with CAN monitoring tools like CANalyzer, BusMaster, or similar platforms is a significant advantage.
- Control Theory Exposure (Preferred): Fundamental exposure to Classical and/or Modern Control theory is preferred.
- Work Authorization: Must be work authorized in the United States OR have the ability to obtain an F-1 visa.
