Summer College Intern – Chief Administrative Office (CAO)
About The Metropolitan District (MDC):
The Metropolitan District (MDC) is a non-profit municipal corporation established in 1929 by the Connecticut General Assembly. Dedicated to providing essential services on a regional basis, the MDC delivers high-quality potable water and sewerage services. Currently, it serves eight member municipalities – Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield, and Windsor – along with portions of other surrounding towns. Beyond water and sewerage, the MDC also provides vital mapping and household hazardous waste collection services.
About the Role:
The Chief Administrative Office (CAO) at the MDC is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated College Intern for its full-time (37.5 hours/week) summer internship program. This is an exceptional opportunity for a college student to gain hands-on experience and contribute significantly to the operational efficiency of a vital public service organization.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:
As a College Intern within the Chief Administrative Office, you will play a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of key business services departments, including Customer Service, Finance, Information Technology, and Procurement. Your tasks may include:
- Actively participating in cross-functional business process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency and effectiveness across departments.
- Shadowing the Chief Administrative Officer and senior staff, offering valuable input and perspectives on ongoing projects and strategic initiatives.
- Conducting essential User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for the customer service payment portal upgrade, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience.
- Collaborating with department staff to develop comprehensive job aids and document new business processes, contributing to knowledge management and operational consistency.
- Assisting in the planning and execution of a department-wide document retention/destruction project, ensuring compliance and organized record-keeping.
- Compiling and analyzing data for critical CAO reporting requirements, including monthly department performance reports and detailed quarterly supplier spend reports.
Qualifications:
To be considered for this internship, candidates should meet the following criteria:
- Currently enrolled as a college student pursuing a B.A., B.S., or an Associate’s degree.
- Preferred fields of study include Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Management, Marketing, Business Systems, or Communications.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
