The College Financial Representative internship program at Northwestern Mutual offers a unique opportunity for students to build an integrated financial planning practice from the ground up. Responsibilities
Our internship program mirrors the full-time Financial Representative career path, allowing you to:
- Learn how to prospect and network effectively to build your business and client base.
- Develop and execute a strategic business plan.
- Call on potential clients and schedule meetings to understand their financial goals.
- Prepare comprehensive financial plans and offer tailored recommendations.
- Gain exposure to proprietary financial planning software platforms.
- Participate in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
- Receive support to obtain Risk Product State Licensing: Life, Accident, and Health.
- Develop essential life skills that create future career opportunities.
As a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, you can expect a flexible schedule that accommodates your academic commitments and personal life. The option to participate in our internship program year-round allows for continuous growth, with support for additional registrations and certifications such as the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. You’ll find inspiration at local and national recognition events, gain access to leadership programs, and collaborate with industry experts. Our diverse culture provides ample resources for both personal and professional growth. Eligible students also have the opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.
Qualifications
Are you a strong candidate for this internship?
- Full-time student; juniors and seniors preferred.
- Demonstrated entrepreneurial ambitions and a strong curiosity for sales.
- Highly involved on campus (e.g., leader, athlete, campus organizations, student government).
- Excellent time-management skills.
- Genuine interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
- Business savvy with a desire to increase critical thinking abilities.
Compensation & Benefits
- Performance-based earnings and revenue.
- Learning and Development Incentives: Up to $1000/month (not inclusive of earned commissions).
- Productivity Bonuses.
- Support for insurance licensing (life, health, DI, LTC).
- Support for SIE, Series 6, Series 63 registrations (eligibility required).
Salary Range: USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Yr. (Note: This range appears to refer to the Learning & Development Incentives, as primary compensation is performance-based.)

If offered to apply for approval of an intern contract to become a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, a national criminal background check is required. Should the background check results provide information which would not allow someone to work for Northwestern Mutual, approval to contract will be withdrawn.
