About the Job: Electrical Engineering Intern

The Progressive Companies Summer Internship Program offers a paid, full-time experience designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world impact. As an intern, you will engage in hands-on projects, hone your problem-solving and communication skills, and gain valuable insights into the architecture, design, engineering, and construction industries. Beyond project work, the program fosters professional and personal growth through community outings, wellness events, service-learning projects, and lunch-and-learns.

Role Overview: Electrical Engineering Intern

As an Electrical Engineering Intern, you will play a crucial role in our project teams, collaborating with project managers and other engineers to design electrical systems for various building types, always with a strong customer focus. Your work will involve preparing design documents for:

  • Power distribution
  • Lighting
  • Fire alarm systems
  • Security systems
  • Communications systems

You will utilize industry-standard software such as AutoCAD and Revit.

Key Responsibilities

As an Electrical Engineering Intern, you will be expected to:

  • Contribute to project teams to ensure the achievement of project schedules and budgets.
  • Manage multiple projects efficiently and accurately, monitoring overall progress against scope and available resources.
  • Provide drafting services and final engineering documents consistent with Progressive’s standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of building models, detailed contract documents, construction documents, photometric lighting simulations, arc flash studies, and specifications.
  • Perform design analysis in line with company standards.
  • Check for Code Compliance information relevant to the electrical discipline and its impact on other disciplines.
  • Collaborate effectively with various disciplines across Progressive Companies.
  • Regularly communicate with Project Manager(s), Project Designer(s), and/or Project Architects(s) regarding changes to project design, scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Understand and meet client project needs to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Utilize various design software/technology, including:
    • Revit
    • AutoCAD
    • BSD Speclink
    • Elum Tools or Visual Lighting Software
    • Easy Power
    • Other emerging technologies for presentation and production.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in an EAC/ABET-accredited Electrical Engineering program.
  • A strong desire to learn about the architectural building process.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of the electrical engineering and documentation process.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, security systems, and communications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality assurance/quality control processes and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to produce construction drawings and specifications.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical standards and regulations, with the ability to research and apply them to technical documents.
  • Strong math, analytical, and problem-solving technical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills as demonstrated through your competencies.
  • Required: Knowledge of Revit or AutoCAD.
  • Preferred: Experience in Arc Flash Studies utilizing software for simulations.
  • Preferred: Proficiency in ElumTools or Visual Lighting Software, and Easy Power.
  • Required: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Preferred: Experience in Project, SharePoint, and Teams.
