Internship Program Overview:
The College Financial Representative internship program at Northwestern Mutual provides aspiring financial professionals with a robust framework for building an integrated financial planning practice from the ground up. Key Responsibilities:
The internship closely mimics the full-time Financial Representative career, allowing interns to:
- Learn to prospect and network effectively to build a business and client base.
- Develop and execute on a business strategy.
- Call on potential clients and set meetings to understand their financial goals.
- Prepare comprehensive plans and offer useful recommendations.
- Gain exposure to proprietary planning software platforms.
- Engage in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
- Receive support for Risk Product State Licensing: Life, Accident, and Health.
- Build essential life skills that create future career opportunities.
Program Structure & Growth Opportunities:
As a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, you can expect a flexible schedule designed to accommodate your academic commitments. The program offers the option to participate year-round, allowing continuous growth and support for additional registrations and certifications such as the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. Interns are inspired at local and national recognition events, gain access to leadership programs, and collaborate with industry experts. The program emphasizes personal and professional growth through diverse resources and a supportive culture. Eligible students with interest will have the opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.
Qualifications – Are you a fit for this internship?
We are looking for motivated individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Currently a full-time student; juniors and seniors are preferred.
- Possess entrepreneurial ambitions and a strong curiosity for sales.
- Highly involved on campus (e.g., leader, athlete, campus organizations, student government).
- Demonstrate excellent time-management skills.
- Have a keen interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
- Exhibit business savvy and a desire to increase critical thinking abilities.

Important Notes:
Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representatives are considered Independent Contractors for income tax purposes and “statutory employees” for Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax purposes, with income based on production. Should an offer to apply for approval of an intern contract be extended, a national criminal background check is required. Approval to contract will be withdrawn if the background check results provide information that would prevent employment with Northwestern Mutual.
Salary Range:
USD $500.00 – USD $1,000.00 /Yr.
