Position Summary
As a Software Engineering Intern at Comtech, you won’t just observe; you’ll actively contribute to the development of systems that truly matter. You will work side-by-side with experienced senior developers, playing a crucial role in:
- Building innovative new applications.
- Maintaining critical existing systems.
- Investigating and resolving both minor and major issues in production-quality software.
This is a hands-on role in a real production environment – not shadowing or busy work. You will put your classroom training into practice by solving complex, real-world problems where every line of code matters and our software can literally help save lives once deployed.
You should be comfortable learning new technologies quickly and eager to dive deep into telecommunications protocols. Expect to take on increasing responsibility throughout the internship, culminating in the opportunity to own a significant, capstone-style project by the end of the program.
You will be an integral part of a dynamic team, reporting to a Director/Senior Manager of E911 Software Development and collaborating closely with both development and operations teams at the Comtech Seattle office.
Key Responsibilities
As a Software Engineering Intern, your contributions will include:
- Collaborate with Senior Engineers: Support senior engineers in the comprehensive design, development, and maintenance of software applications.
- Problem Solving: Actively assist in debugging, troubleshooting, and resolving issues within production-quality systems.
- Code Contribution: Write and contribute clean, efficient code to small, well-scoped projects within an established technology stack.
- SDLC & Best Practices: Learn, apply, and adhere to the organization’s Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), coding standards, and best practices.
- Technical Growth: Progressively take on increasing technical responsibility as your proficiency and system knowledge grow.
- Quality Assurance: Participate actively in code reviews, comprehensive testing, and documentation efforts.
- Real-World Application: Develop and test software directly within a live production environment.
- Domain Expertise: Learn and work with complex telecommunications protocols, especially those relevant to public safety systems like E911.
- Tool Exposure: Gain practical exposure to industry-standard development and monitoring tools such as GitLab, Splunk, automation frameworks, and SIP traffic generators.
- Team Collaboration: Work effectively with cross-functional engineering and operations teams.
- Communication: Clearly communicate technical progress, identified issues, and learned insights to peers and leadership.
- Capstone Project: Successfully complete a capstone-style project by the end of the internship, showcasing your applied engineering skills and contributions.
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related relevant technical field.
- A strong foundational understanding of programming principles and data structures.
- Eagerness to learn new technologies quickly and dive deep into telecommunications protocols.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
