Equine Rotating Internship (6 Months) – Reproduction Emphasis

South Shore Equine Clinic invites applications for a comprehensive 6-month Rotating Internship, with a strong emphasis on reproduction, incorporating both ambulatory and hospital caseloads.

Program Goal

The primary objective of this internship is to develop a qualified associate who is highly proficient in all aspects of equine reproduction and foal care. Interns will also become skilled diagnosticians, comfortable with a wide range of diagnostic techniques and treatment options across various equine disciplines.

Eligibility & Prerequisites

• Graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
• Eligible for a Massachusetts state veterinary license or currently enrolled in the ECFVG program for foreign graduates.
• Successfully passed the NAVLE.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Internship Dates

February 1st – July 31st

Caseload & Clinical Experience

This internship offers a diverse caseload with a strong concentration on in-hospital and reproduction cases. Interns will gain extensive experience in:

• Reproduction: Estrus synchronization, artificial insemination, pregnancy confirmations, on-site foaling, and farm-based foal visits.
• In-Hospital Cases: Scheduled haul-in appointments (3 days/week), emergency cases (any time/day), and daily discharges.
• Varied Haul-ins:
  • Performance Horse Evaluations: Hunter/Jumper, 3-day eventing, dressage, Standardbred racehorses, and Western pleasure, focusing on diagnostics and therapeutics.
  • Advanced Diagnostics & Therapeutics: Lameness workups, DR radiography, Ultrasound, MRI, shockwave, Tenex procedures, PRP, IRAP, Arthramid, and conventional intra-articular care.
  • Internal Medicine: Referrals, ophthalmic cases, and medical colic cases.
  • Preventative Care & Dentistry.
• General Ambulatory/Emergencies: Seen as needed.

Estimated Case Breakdown:

• 50% Reproductive and Foaling
• 30% Internal Medicine/General Practice (Hospital)
• 15% Preventative Care/General Practice (Ambulatory)
• 5% Emergency (Note: No colic surgery performed on-site)

Typical Weekly Workload:

• 4 days/week: Primarily hospital-based.
• 1 day/week: Primarily ambulatory.
• Saturdays: Hospital-based, assisting with haul-ins, reproductive cases, and emergencies as they occur.
• Monday, Wednesday & Friday: May also be utilized for ambulatory calls depending on the hospital caseload.
• Tuesday/Thursday: Dedicated to in-clinic cases and surgeries.
• Saturday (AM): In-clinic caseload and weekend ambulatory assistance as required.

Emergency Duty & On-Call Structure

• Shared Rotation: Foaling duty and mare scanning rotation are shared with other interns, including nights and weekends.
• Clinician Backup: Interns are always supported by a back-up clinician during emergency duties.
• Time Off: Typically includes two nights off per week and one full weekend off per month.
• On-call is split amongst interns and associates.

Supervision & Mentorship

The program emphasizes a progression from heavily mentored and supervised initial training towards increasing independence in patient care and procedural execution, tailored to individual intern development.

Compensation & Benefits

• Stipend: $21,250 for the 6-month period.
• Additional Earnings: Emergency fees.

Upon completion of the internship, you will be proficient as an ambulatory associate, comfortable in diagnosing and treating a wide array of equine conditions, including but not limited to:

• Podiatry and Laminitis Management
• Dentistry: Routine floating and extractions
• Ophthalmology: Ulcers, uveitis, SCC, Subpalpebral lavage systems
• Cellulitis
• Internal Medicine: Metabolic and Cushing’s Disease, emergency and chronic colic care
• Reproduction Management: Estrus synchronization and artificial insemination
• Laceration Repair and Field Surgery: Castrations, enucleations, tumor removals
• Dermatology: Melanoma, SCC, hives, immune-mediated skin diseases
• Lameness and Sports Medicine
• Senior and Geriatric Care
• Advanced Imaging:
  • Ultrasonography: Limbs, thorax, abdomen, eyes, guided injections
  • Digital Radiography: Limbs, skulls, necks, backs
• Complementary Therapies: Acupuncture and Chiropractic (VSMT) care
• Comprehensive Preventative Care
