Position Overview: Cyber Summer Associate Program

The Cyber Summer Associate Program is a comprehensive ten-week internship designed to immerse you in one specialized area of LevelBlue’s Professional Services. You will gain hands-on experience in our proactive and reactive cybersecurity services, working directly on client projects and developing critical information security skills in one of the following fields:

  • Digital Forensics & Incident Response (DFIR):
    The DFIR team collaborates with organizations during cyberattacks or data breaches, working alongside legal counsel to acquire, process, and analyze digital evidence. DFIR CSAs will work in-person in one of our dedicated forensic labs in New York, Chicago, or Washington, DC.
  • Security Testing:
    The Testing team proactively identifies security vulnerabilities. This involves performing dynamic security assessments of web applications and live networks, simulating attacker scenarios (such as phishing campaigns and red teams), and conducting secure code reviews of client codebases. Security Testing CSAs will work in-person in our New York lab.
  • Solutions Development (SolDev):
    SolDev is our software engineering team dedicated to building custom cybersecurity tools & platforms for our consulting practices. SolDev CSAs will work in-person in our New York lab on production applications, primarily writing code in Python and Rust.

Program Details & Experience

This paid internship commences in June with a comprehensive virtual orientation schedule. During this initial period, you will have the opportunity to meet with firm leadership, participate in engaging training exercises, network with colleagues, and attend special events.

Cyber Summer Associates will work directly with our existing employees in one of our U.S. offices. You will be fully immersed in our experienced client teams, contributing to a wide variety of client projects. The program emphasizes continuous learning, with opportunities to use cutting-edge tools and technologies and attend regular training sessions and demos to build both technical and professional skills. Additionally, you will complete a research project on an impactful topic relevant to the firm’s work, presenting your findings at the program’s conclusion.

From day one, you will learn from managers and colleagues who possess robust technical backgrounds, many of whom have directly contributed to developing the foundations of the cyber-focused industry. Each Cyber Summer Associate will be supported by both a dedicated mentor and supervisor to guide their client work, professional development, and research projects.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks related to technical consulting engagements involving digital forensics, incident response, security testing, or security advisory.
  • Support teams in assessing clients’ risks related to internal IT infrastructure, publicly available IT assets, and other relevant attack surfaces.
  • Become proficient with industry standard tools and practices.
  • Preserve and analyze data from laptop and desktop computers, servers, and mobile devices.
  • Design, develop, document, analyze, test, and modify computer systems & programs.
  • Conduct statistical analysis of large data sets and other investigative components of cases.
  • Learn to present sophisticated technical matters and analysis clearly and concisely.
  • Help uncover causes of clients’ network intrusions/data breaches and increase knowledge of malware.
  • Aid in the development of IT security risk metrics.
  • Research and pilot security software (commercial and open-source).
  • Assist in developing proprietary tools and programs to aid in matters of forensic analysis, network incident response, or penetration testing.
  • Work alongside our practitioners and cybersecurity specialists.
  • Stay up-to-date with the current regulatory environment, industry trends, and related implications.
  • Develop and broaden skills through training and research.
  • Contribute to and attend in-house training sessions.
  • Suggest and pursue firm-enhancing projects that draw on your skills and academic interests.

Basic Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate Degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Engineering, Digital Forensics, or another quant-focused major.
  • Knowledge of computer networking technologies.
  • Familiarity with computer system hardware and software.
  • Strong analytic, qualitative, and quantitative reasoning skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, plus attention to detail.
  • Solid understanding of MS Office, and familiarity with Windows, Macintosh, and/or Linux operating systems.
  • Creative problem-solving ability and eagerness to learn and research new skills.
  • Exceptional work ethic, high level of professionalism, and commitment to ethical standards.
  • Strong self-motivation and a positive mentality.

Applicants for this role should be rising seniors, graduating between Winter 2026 – Spring 2027 and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.

Preferred Experience

  • Security Testing: Familiarity with configuring, identifying, testing, and remediating vulnerable services and security bugs, and other ethical hacking techniques; experience with cybersecurity related CTF challenges and platforms such as Hack The Box, Over The Wire, Hacker101, etc.
  • DFIR: Investigative mindset, foundational knowledge of digital forensic artifacts or operating systems, and experience with any of the following: malware analysis; database operations and analysis; system administration; security tooling including EDR; cloud security and investigations; preservation of digital media; parsing and drawing conclusions from large data sets.
  • Solutions Development: You must love writing code, as you’ll be doing it every day. You’ll know Python and a statically-typed compiled language (e.g., Java, C++, Rust, Zig, Haskell). You’ll know algorithms and data structures, version control with git, unit testing, and be comfortable working with remote team members and taking direction from them. Interest in cybersecurity and AWS cloud is helpful.
  • Flexibility to collaborate or work independently and ability to grasp new concepts quickly and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficiency with Python, Java, C#, C++, SQL, or assembly languages are a plus but programming skills are not required (for DFIR/Testing, implicitly).
