About the Job: Software Engineer Intern

At Stripe, we’re building the financial infrastructure for the internet. Millions of companies worldwide, from startups to large enterprises, rely on our platform to accept payments, grow revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our ambitious mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we believe there’s a staggering amount of work ahead. This presents an unprecedented opportunity for you to contribute to making the global economy accessible to everyone, while engaging in some of the most impactful work of your career.

About The Team

Our internship program is designed to immerse you in projects that directly contribute to our mission of growing the internet’s GDP. As an intern, you will:

  • Work with diverse systems and technologies.
  • Gain invaluable experience in systems design and testing.
  • Have opportunities to present your work to your team and the wider organization.
  • Benefit from a dedicated intern manager providing guidance and support.
  • Contribute to projects that are integral parts of the team’s roadmap, ensuring your work has a direct and meaningful impact on Stripe’s mission.

What You’ll Do

Every internship at Stripe revolves around a real, legitimate project that addresses urgent customer needs and touches various parts of our operations and technology stack. You will be fully supported in shipping your project to production – yes, you will actually ship it!

Recent intern projects have included:

  • Rebuilding our statistics aggregation service.
  • Building new service discovery systems.
  • Developing user-facing features, such as improving error message clarity on Stripe Checkout.

As a Stripe intern, you’ll tackle important projects aimed at increasing global commerce. You’ll work alongside exceptional people who maintain high standards and inspire others to achieve more. We deeply value both technical and personal growth, and our internship program is a key vehicle for fostering both.

Responsibilities

  • Write software that will be used in production and have a meaningful impact at Stripe.
  • Actively give and receive technical feedback through code reviews and design discussions.
  • Collaborate effectively with other engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to proactively seek and incorporate feedback.
  • Learn quickly by asking insightful questions, working effectively with your intern manager and teammates, and clearly communicating the status of your work.

Who You Are

We encourage you to apply if you meet the minimum requirements. Preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a strict requirement.

Minimum Requirements

  • A strong fundamental understanding of computer science, demonstrated through pursuit of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, math, or a related discipline.
  • Some experience and familiarity with programming, gained through side projects or classwork. While we primarily work in Java, Ruby, JavaScript, Scala, and Go, we believe new programming languages can be learned if core fundamentals are present.
  • Experience from previous internships or other multi-person projects (including open source contributions) that showcase your ability to evaluate and receive feedback from mentors, peers, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar systems and quickly form an understanding of them through independent research and collaboration with mentors and subject matter experts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of university education, or equivalent work experience.
  • One or more areas of specialized knowledge balanced with general skills (e.g., expertise in frontend technologies combined with a high-level understanding of how a service handles an HTTP request).
  • Understanding of and some experience writing high-quality pull requests with good test coverage, and a working knowledge to complete projects with minimal defects.
  • Familiarity with navigating and managing your work in new code bases, potentially involving multiple languages.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely to explain your work to stakeholders, team members, and other Stripes.

In-office Expectations

For office-assigned Stripes in most locations, the current expectation is to spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. Please note that this expectation may vary based on your specific role, team, and location. For example, our Bucharest, Romania site has an 80% in-office expectation, and Stripe Delivery Center roles in Mexico City, Mexico, and Bengaluru, India, are 100% in-office. Additionally, some teams may have greater in-office attendance requirements to appropriately support our users and workflows, which the hiring manager will discuss with you.

This hybrid approach aims to strike a balance, fostering in-person collaboration and learning while supporting flexibility where possible.

Pay and Benefits

The annual US base salary for this internship role is $123,500. Please note that for roles outside the US, applicants can request the annual salary range for their specific location during the interview process.

Additional benefits for this role may include:

  • Equity
  • Company bonus (if applicable)
  • 401(k) plan
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • Wellness stipends
