About The Role: Safety Intern
MWH is seeking a Safety Intern to provide essential support for active water and wastewater construction projects. This hands-on internship offers meaningful exposure to dynamic heavy civil construction environments while playing a crucial role in promoting a strong safety culture across the jobsite.
The Safety Intern will work closely with dedicated Safety Teams, Project Teams, and Field Leadership to support daily safety activities, ensure compliance efforts, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This role is specifically designed as a learning-focused, mentorship-driven experience for students pursuing careers in safety, construction management, engineering, or related fields.
Key Learning Opportunities & Responsibilities
- Field Safety Support
- Assist with daily site safety walks and hazard identification activities.
- Support the development and review of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and Pre-Task Plans.
- Observe and help reinforce safe work practices across active construction areas.
- Participate in incident investigations and near-miss reporting under direct supervision.
- Gain exposure to real-world risk mitigation strategies in heavy civil construction.
- Training & Compliance
- Support safety orientations for new hires, visitors, and subcontractors.
- Assist with tracking safety training records, certifications, and sign-in documentation.
- Help maintain OSHA, and project-specific safety documentation.
- Support compliance with client, regulatory, and company safety requirements.
- Safety Meetings & Communication
- Assist with the preparation and delivery of toolbox talks and safety stand-downs.
- Help post and maintain safety signage, notices, and jobsite updates.
- Participate in weekly safety meetings with project leadership.
- Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain safety logs, inspection forms, and corrective action tracking.
- Assist with audit preparation and follow-up documentation.
- Enter safety data into company systems as required.
- Professional Development
- Shadow Safety Coordinators, Site Safety Managers, and Superintendents.
- Gain exposure to heavy equipment operations, confined space entry, excavation, concrete work, and utility installation.
- Participate in mentorship check-ins and structured internship development activities.
Qualifications
- Basic Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a program in Safety Management, Construction Management, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
- Strong interest in construction safety and field operations.
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather and active construction environments.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong communication, observational, and organizational skills.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Prior construction, field, or safety-related experience.
- Familiarity with heavy civil or infrastructure construction environments.
- Interest in pursuing a long-term career in construction safety.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain and access active construction areas.
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs as required.
- Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves, and boots.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. as needed.
Compensation
The anticipated salary for this position is between $23 – $26 per hour.
