Job Description: Product Designer Intern

Locations: Remote, United States

Overview:
The Product Designer Intern role at GitHub focuses on creating inclusive experiences that empower developers of all backgrounds, abilities, and identities. This internship emphasizes the belief that building for everyone starts with designing for everyone. The intern will contribute to GitHub’s design system, shape inclusive workflows, and bring empathy, creativity, and curiosity to problem-solving. They will collaborate with designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers to build thoughtful, equitable, and innovative solutions, while also exploring how inclusive design principles can be applied to emerging technologies like AI-enhanced developer tools. This is a unique opportunity to influence a widely used developer platform and learn how inclusive principles are applied in real products, all while using GitHub to build GitHub.

Internship Details:
This is a remote summer internship for 12 consecutive weeks, with start dates between May – June 2026.

Responsibilities:
Collaborate with designers, researchers, engineers, and product partners to design experiences suitable for a wide variety of users.
Design and iterate on inclusive user flows, components, and UI patterns.
Annotate accessibility specs and design intent within Figma.
Help evolve inclusive design practices, including contributing to accessibility reviews, usability testing, and inclusive research.
Contribute to documentation and design guidance related to inclusivity and accessibility.
Learn and apply WCAG accessibility standards, striving to go beyond compliance to advocate for human-centered design decisions.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Product Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Accessibility Studies, or a related field, with at least one term remaining post-internship.
• A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful design work with a strong emphasis on inclusion and accessibility.
Experience designing equitable experiences that consider diverse user needs and contexts, gained through internships, academic projects, research, or equivalent work.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience using design tools such as Figma and the ability to document accessibility specifications and annotations.
Curiosity about emerging technologies like AI and their impact on inclusive and accessible design.
• Familiarity with accessibility and inclusive design frameworks (e.g., WCAG, POUR principles, or Microsoft Inclusive Design toolkit).
• Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS or design systems.
Strong written communication skills.

Compensation Range:
The base salary range for this job is USD $33.17 – USD $87.93 /Hr. This range is intended to cover roles across the United States, with an individual’s base pay depending on factors like geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Certain roles at GitHub may also be eligible for benefits and additional rewards such as annual bonuses and stock, allocated based on individual impact. Some roles may also offer sales incentives.
