Job Description (Engineering Internship Program)
This application is for the Engineering Internship Program, specializing in one of four key areas: Active Transportation, Electric & Power Delivery Engineering, Civil & Water Engineering, and Public Works.
HOURS AND COMPENSATION:
• The internship will be a minimum of 20 hours and up to 40 hours per week.
• It will run from approximately June to August.
• This is an onsite position, and depending on the selected internship, some nights and weekends may be required.
• The pay rate is $20.23-$22.59 per hour.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES BY SPECIALIZATION:
• Active Transportation (focus on Project Management and Civil Engineering):
• Support projects to improve pedestrian, bicycle, and transit connectivity in Rochester.
• Assist with research on best practices, data gathering/analysis, and stakeholder engagement for accessibility and mobility.
• Contribute to mapping, outreach, and reporting for wayfinding strategies.
• Shadow and oversee urban innovation projects in downtown Rochester, in partnership with Destination Medical Center.
• Water:
• Assist with planning and ensuring safe drinking water, including reviewing and designing water facilities.
• Perform lead service record analysis.
• Tour water and electric facilities and shadow field employees.
• Assist with various projects at RPU (Rochester Public Utilities).
• Electric & Power Delivery:
• Assist electrical and civil engineers with the design, testing, and as-built processes for Rochester Electrical and Water Utility Systems.
• Support technical work in the Power Delivery division, including asset mapping, maintenance programs, and data analysis.
• Specific projects will be based on needs and candidate interests, potentially including developing mobile data collection applications, field inspections and testing, or using GIS mapping systems.
• Public Works:
• Interns will be assigned to project teams for various Engineering Capital Improvement Plan initiatives (e.g., stormwater replacement, sidewalk improvement, street reconstruction).
• Support field operations on construction projects, assisting construction and material inspectors, and surveyors.
• Assist in inspecting City sidewalks, trails, and the Flood Control Management program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Education and Experience:
• 18 years of age or older.
• Pursuing post-secondary education in engineering, GIS, math, science, or a closely related field.
• Ability to travel to multiple locations within the City of Rochester, MN.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability to work with a team and independently.
• Enthusiasm for working outside, positive attitude, self-starter.
• Willingness to learn new skills and cultural competencies.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience working with individuals from a variety of racial, geographic, and financial backgrounds.
• Proficiency in another language (Bilingual or Multilingual).
• Experience with Microsoft Office products.
