Job Description: DoD SkillBridge Internship – Senior Training Representative
This is an UNPAID internship offered through the DoD SkillBridge Program, specifically designed for transitioning active-duty U.S. military personnel. The internship allows military members to gain real-world experience during their final 180 days of active-duty service, with applications accepted within their final 12 months.
The primary Objective is for the SkillBridge intern to train as a Senior Training Representative with HII Mission Technologies (HII-MT), reporting to a designated supervisor. The intern will focus on:
• Designing and delivering curricula to train personnel at all levels.
• Developing tests and visual aids.
• Conducting training classes.
• Developing criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of training activities.
• Staying informed about training and development research, including learning theory, motivation theory, new materials, methods, and techniques.
• Completing special projects as needed.
The internship aims to place transitioning military into roles that align their knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), education, and military training with potential full-time, regular, and permanent jobs at HII-MT.
Desired End State (2-month target):
By the end of two months, the intern is expected to have:
• Developed the core knowledge, skills, and ability to work as a contributing member of a Training Development Team.
• Gained invaluable insights into governmental and non-governmental business practices.
• Developed the ability to operate within complex programs responsible for developing training courses for future and current Navy Training Programs.
• Gained experience working with a leading global engineering and defense technologies provider in a dynamic program office environment.
Specifically, the intern will:
• Understand the process of developing curricula to U.S. Navy Learning Center’s compliance standards.
• Increase their understanding of instructional design concepts and their application to a training program.
• Develop a deep understanding of different types of learning theories and content development process technologies.
• Understand the requirements of Fleet Introduction Training and Groom training for BFTT and ATD Systems.
• Develop an understanding of managing complex program processes.
HII Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the SkillBridge intern, viewing the program as an overall positive experience.
Essential Job Responsibilities and Training Plan:
Training Location: San Diego, CA
Phase 1 – Basics:
• Week 1: In-processing, HII company and policy familiarization, Security and Information Technology Training, employee introductions, and campus familiarization.
• Week 2: Introduction to curricula development and governance, focusing on how U.S. Navy programs develop technical curricula. Review of Legacy AIM I to AIM CPM/LOM Conversion Style Guide, Ready Relevant Learning (RRL) Process Manual, and other applicable policies to understand statutory requirements for curricula development standards and common practices.
• Week 3: Introduction to best practices for providing continuous high-level, trusted advice and technical assistance regarding curriculum analysis, design, development, implementation, instruction, and assessment in naval vessel courses of instruction.
• Week 4: Working under supervision with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop course material (task analysis, learning objectives, course master schedules, lessons, instructional aids, training plans, test banks, etc.) for naval vessel courses of instruction.
Phase 2 – Curricula Management:
• Week 5: Introduction to the Training Impact Review process and the technical notification process for valid training impacts. The intern will develop a working knowledge of program-specifics, including government-to-Materials Support Agent (MSA) rules, success criteria, milestones, critical path, and metrics.
• Week 6: Introduction to Multimedia resources, including text, drawings, still and moving images (videos), graphics, audio, animation, simulation, and other digital media for information expression, storage, communication, and processing.
Phase 3 – Curricula Auditing:
• Week 7: Introduction to In-Progress-Review (IPR) events. The intern will learn curricula review events’ scheduling, coordination, and execution processes. They will also create quality review matrixes, Plans of Action and Milestones (POA&M), and checklists while analyzing appropriate stakeholder deadlines.
• Week 8: Attend and audit portions of the ITSIS Fleet Introductory Training course for BFTT and ATD Operator and Maintenance courses.
Additional Goals:
• Introduction to Materials Support Agent (MSA) responsibilities.
• Introduction to contract support elements and DoD acquisition strategies.
• Development of Formal Training for Submarine HM&E courses.
• Project Management.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Active-Duty Military ONLY within the final 180 days of active-duty service (applications accepted within final 12 months).
• SECRET security clearance is required.
• 3 years of relevant U.S. Navy experience with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Must have experience operating and maintaining Battle Force Tactical Trainer (BFTT/ATD) systems.
• Experience performing training analysis, developing programs of instruction (including lesson plans), and conducting training in support of the Government.
• Experience assisting in developing training curriculum, documentation, and conducting all training for a supported program.
Preferred Requirements:
• Knowledge of NAVEDTRA instructions.
• Certified Navy Instructor (NEC 9502).
• Familiarity with Content Planning Module (CPM) and Learning Object Module (LOM) end-to-end training at the Naval Education and Training Command.
• Navy Master Training Specialist.
