Job Description

Overall Purpose of Southwire’s College Programs:
The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher, giving them meaningful work that builds on what they are learning in the classroom. The programs are project-based, where students receive a project at the beginning of the summer and present it in a project expo at the end of the summer. The program aims to help early career professionals bring together formal learning and productive work to improve their ability to transition from school to work, providing “real world” applications of academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and consideration for employment after graduation.

General Program Details:
• Intern assignments are generally 10-12 weeks, and co-op assignments are generally 16-18 weeks.
• Assignments include a dedicated project and opportunities to present the work.
• Students will collaborate on other exciting projects and work with talented peers and inspirational leaders.
• A robust developmental experience is provided through immersive onboarding and offboarding, an assigned mentor, networking opportunities, organized events, activities, and community service/volunteer initiatives.
• Participants have the opportunity to impact the future of the organization while being exposed to a world-class program community.
• Rising senior interns and co-ops are considered for full-time employment opportunities.
• All new interns and co-ops must begin in the summer rotation.

Specific Job Description (Health and Safety Intern):

Job Summary/Objective:
This position will support the Health and Safety team by assisting with programs and initiatives to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. The Health and Safety Intern will play a key role in supporting workplace safety initiatives by analyzing trends, conducting compliance audits, and developing actionable improvement plans. This internship offers hands-on experience in safety culture development, risk assessment, and engineering controls. The role emphasizes influencing safe behaviors, improving safety standards, and collaborating across departments to drive change. Each student will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of study and be responsible for developing a timeline, progress updates, and final delivery in a senior leadership expo.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in conducting safety audits and inspections within facilities.
• Support development and delivery of safety training materials and programs.
• Participate in Kaizen events and hazard identification activities.
• Collect, analyze, and report safety data and incident trends.
• Help maintain safety documentation and compliance records.
• Research and recommend best practices to enhance workplace safety culture.
• Assist with safety communications and awareness campaigns.
• Collaborate with team members on safety improvement projects and initiatives.
• Perform other safety-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Minimum 2.5 GPA.
• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Environmental Health and Safety or Industrial Engineering.
• Reliable transportation to and from work.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or other relevant tools.
