Job Description
Job Title: Assistant Project Engineer Intern
This internship at Christman Mid-Atlantic Constructors offers undergraduate students a robust opportunity to “Build More with Your Career” by gaining hands-on experience in the commercial construction industry. The program is designed to provide learning about various building types and delivery methods, coupled with practical, on-the-job responsibilities. Internship Job Summary:
As an Assistant Project Engineer Intern, you will be a valued member of the operations team during the upcoming Summer Internship Program. This role provides opportunities to gain hands-on experience during either the project planning and/or construction phases. Interns will play a significant role on a construction project leadership team, develop construction management expertise, learn essential technology applications for efficient delivery of services, and participate in a broad range of project planning and/or construction management activities. A key aspect of the role involves supporting team members, recognizing challenges early, and proactively planning for important project activities.
Key Responsibilities (“What You Will Do”):
As an Assistant Project Engineer Intern, you will play a crucial part in supporting the construction project team with responsibilities including, but not limited to:
• Providing administrative and technical support to the project team.
• Assisting with Request for Information (RFI), document control and management, and the creation and tracking of submittals.
• Supporting cost tracking and schedule updates.
• Assisting in summarizing important discussions, questions, and decisions from regular project team meetings, owner meetings, and weekly subcontractor meetings.
• Reading and understanding specification books to ensure compliance and project quality.
• Assisting the Project Manager with identifying necessary inspections, creating project-specific inspection logs, establishing relationships with inspectors, scheduling inspections, and ensuring readiness.
• Assisting in updating contract drawings to reflect all approved changes and ensuring trade contractor document updates.
• Assisting Superintendents with daily reports and managing all progress and quality photos.
• Posting all required safety information and signage to inform workers and site visitors about hazards and confirming appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including mandatory hardhats and safety glasses, is worn.
• Modeling safety awareness and planning at all times, observing safety practices, and reporting any concerns to the Project Superintendent or Project Manager.
• Supporting the logistics process for all safety initiatives listed in the site-specific safety plan.
• Assisting with other tasks as assigned.
Required Education and Experience (“What You Bring To The Team”):
• Education: Must be an active, full-time Sophomore-Senior level student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field.
• Academic Performance: A minimum 3.0 GPA is required.
• Experience (Preferred): Previous work or internship experience in the commercial construction industry is preferred.
• Leadership/Engagement: Shows participation and/or leadership roles in student organizations or extracurricular club activities.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
• The majority of work is conducted outside at the construction site and in an office trailer, where project monitoring and daily decisions occur.
• The position is often exposed to sounds and loud noises from construction equipment.
• Requires the wearing of protective equipment on the construction site, including hardhats, safety glasses, and highly visible clothing.
• Temperatures and conditions may vary depending on the weather and seasons.
• Physical Requirements: The role requires the ability to occasionally stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Candidates must be able to talk, hear, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, use a telephone, and operate a keyboard. The ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds is necessary. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
