Job Description, Detailed

This is an Internship position for a Transmission Line Engineer within the Kiewit Power Engineering group, specifically in the Design Engineering Department for the Power Market. The employment type is Full Time Temporary.

The internship is targeted at students pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. Interns will assist with performing engineering and design duties that require the application of engineering principles and knowledge of engineering design. They will join a team of highly specialized design professionals, supporting a variety of substation, transmission, and distribution projects ranging from 12kV to 500kV. These projects involve both engineering detailed design and Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) models for clients across the country.

The position is based out of Raleigh, NC.

Key Responsibilities include:

Creating design documents and drawings: Working with the project team to generate transmission line design criteria for PLS-CADD, creating bills of materials, and applying field mark-ups of project as-built drawings with minimal supervision.
Engineering application software usage: Assisting with the use of software like PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS TOWER to build, modify, and analyze transmission line, pole, and tower models.
Developing construction documents: Assisting with developing construction assembly drawings, material specifications, and structure loading packages for submittal to vendors.
Project scheduling and coordination: Reviewing project schedules and working with the project engineer to ensure projects remain on schedule, and assisting with communication and coordination of project activities with the project engineer, customer representatives, and others.
Document management and standards: Properly using the document management system and applying corporate standard engineering practices.
Problem-solving: Bringing potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party.
Quality and accuracy: Taking personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of assigned work.

Qualifications required for this internship:

Education: Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited university.
GPA: A 3.0 cumulative GPA is preferred.
Basic knowledge and understanding of:
• AC/DC fundamentals
• Per-unit mathematics and symmetrical components
• Design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project
• Engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI
• Common Word processing, Spreadsheet, and E-mail software
Skills: Working effectively in a team environment and communicating effectively with co-workers, vendors, and clients.
