Job Description
Job Title: Construction Management Intern
This is a summer internship opportunity designed for motivated individuals with a genuine interest in the construction industry. The internship offers a chance to gain hands-on learning experience across various areas within construction management.
Potential Internship Placement Areas:
Depending on the specific placement, interns may spend time in one or more of the following areas:
• Field Management
• Project Management
• Preconstruction Services
• Virtual Design & Construction Coordination (VDC)
• Safety
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will gain exposure and contribute to various critical aspects of construction management, including:
• Project Management Dive: Engaging with project finances, maintaining contract documents, issuing subcontracts, preparing submittal schedules, coordinating meetings, managing Requests for Information (RFIs), and handling change order requests.
• Safety and Quality Control Exploration: Understanding the importance of Safety and Quality Control programs, coordinating actions to address problems, creating safety procedures, and conducting first-hand safety inspections on job sites.
• Field Management Experience: Learning what is required to lead on-site activities throughout the construction process to ensure successful project delivery on time and within budget.
• Preconstruction Process Understanding: Assisting with the preparation of bid packages, evaluating subcontractor bids, reviewing proposals and specifications, analyzing drawings, and executing material takeoffs.
• Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Engagement: Gaining exposure to the latest technology used in preconstruction and building construction. Learning to create, edit, and run clash detection on three-dimensional Building Information Models (BIM) which include structural, interior, external architectural elements, and Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems using applications such as AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Revit.
• Safety Participation: Actively participating in the Hourigan Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) by committing to safe work practices, raising concerns, attending and applying safety and health training, and contributing to hazard elimination within their capability with the support of safety staff.
Qualifications and Experience:
Candidates for the Construction Management Intern position should possess the following:
• Education: Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in construction management, engineering, or a related discipline.
• Interest: Must demonstrate a genuine interest in the construction industry.
• Learning Orientation: Fosters a strong desire to learn and welcomes new challenges.
• Availability: Able to work approximately 40 hours per week for the duration of the summer internship.
• Communication Skills: Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Work Style: Able to work independently while also valuing teamwork and collaboration.
