Job description
This role is for a motivated intern (civil engineer, or similar) at GEI’s Portland, ME office. The intern will work with GEI professionals on project analysis and field work, focusing on areas such as geotechnical observation, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, data compilation, GIS, and CAD. This is described as an excellent opportunity to learn from staff and gain a wide range of experience.
The position will involve working on projects across various settings, including:
• Transportation: Soil and rock data collection.
• Coastal: Shoreline protection, harbor planning.
• Riverine: Hydrologic and hydraulic studies.
• Reservoirs: Dam, levee, spillway analysis.
• Subsurface: Foundation exploration and design.
• Structures: Building, wharf, bulkhead design.
The intern will support GEI’s civil/water resources, structural, geotechnical, and environmental engineering practices.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties:
• Support work in geotechnical engineering (building foundations, dam safety), water resources (hydrology and hydraulics), structural engineering (marine/waterfront structures), and environmental (site investigation and remediation).
• Assist with preparation of CAD files, develop spreadsheets and databases, and conduct technical analysis.
• Assist with project mapping in GIS and project drafting in CAD.
• Perform field work as needed, including field observation and data collection, soil and water sample collection, drill rig observation, and other field investigations.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Pursuit of a BS or MS in civil engineering, or similar, with completed coursework in soils, structures, hydrology, and hydraulics. Previous internship experience is a plus.
• Working knowledge of GIS and CAD. Experience with Civil 3D is a plus.
• Self-motivated, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to perform field work at active construction sites year-round without restrictions, and in inclement weather if required.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel on temporary assignments as needed.
Compensation:
The pay range for this position is $23.00-$25.00/hour.
Physical Requirements:
The role involves a work environment that is primarily sedentary, with occasional (0-35% of day) light activities.
• Sitting: Continuous (67-100% of day, 4+ hours).
• Standing and Walking: Occasional (0-35% of day, 1-2 hours).
• Lifting/Carrying/Push/Pull: Occasional (0-25 lbs).
• Other activities (Twisting, Bending, Reaching, Squat/Kneel/Crawl): Occasional.
• Keyboard use/repetitive motion: Continuous (4+ hours).
• Vision: Near and Far Vision are Very Accurate (20/20), with Color Discrimination required.
• Sensory Requirements: Moderate Depth perception and Hearing.
• Environmental Requirements (Occupational Exposure Risk Potential – Reasonably Anticipated): Extreme temperatures, uneven surfaces or elevations, and dust/particulate matter. Other risks like bloodborne pathogens, chemical, airborne communicable diseases, and radiation are not anticipated.
