Job Title: Veterinary Technology Internship

Program Overview:
Join the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for a comprehensive 6-12 week internship focusing on zoo medicine. This rotation requires a commitment of a minimum of 32 hours per week and is tailored for individuals seeking to gain valuable clinical experience in an exotic animal setting.

Key Learning Areas and Exposure:
Interns will gain first-hand clinical experience and exposure to various critical aspects of zoo medicine, including:
• Clinical medicine
• Surgery
• Husbandry practices
• Quarantine protocols
• Laboratory techniques
• Pathology

Responsibilities and Duties:
Interns will actively assist veterinary staff in a range of duties, such as:
• Assisting with medical and surgical procedures.
• Assisting with the setup for medical and surgical procedures.
• Patient anesthetic monitoring.
• Preparation and processing of laboratory samples.
• Providing hospitalized patient care.
• Managing quarantine patients.
• Maintaining veterinary supplies and equipment.
• Maintaining accurate patient records.

Eligibility and Qualifications:
This internship is open to:
• Students currently enrolled in an accredited veterinary technology program.
• Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs) with a current license looking to enter the zoo medicine field.

Ideal candidates will possess the following:
Academic Status: Second-year college students or recent graduates (within 2 years) of a veterinary technology program.
Experience: Experience working or interning in a veterinary practice directly with animals is required.
Knowledge: Strong knowledge of exotic animals and their medicine is highly encouraged.
Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Work Availability: Ability to work Monday-Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
Adherence to Protocols: Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures, including all safety protocols.
Health Requirements: Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement.
Policy Compliance: Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy.
Background Check: Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check.
Logistics: Ability to provide their own housing and transportation for the duration of the internship.

Program Duration: Minimum of 32 hours/week for 6 to 12 weeks.
