Job Description: Summer Project Engineer Intern

This is an entry-level internship positioned within the Internship Department at W.E. O’Neil, located in Phoenix, AZ. The compensation for this role is $21.00 – $26.00 per hour.

The Summer Project Engineer Intern role offers a significant opportunity to learn critical hands-on experience while exploring career paths in engineering, superintendence, or project management within the construction industry. Interns will be assigned to a commercial construction project site and will receive ongoing training directly from a Project Manager.

Key Responsibilities and Experience Gained at O’Neil:

Project Scheduling: Assisting the Superintendent and Project Manager in the creation, updating, and maintenance of the project’s critical path schedule.
Procurement & Expediting: Reviewing the procurement schedule, tracking, expediting, and processing all subcontractor/vendor shop drawings and submittals through the approval process to ensure timely delivery of equipment and materials.
Documentation Management: Maintaining project documentation and expediting it to the owner, architect, and engineers for approval. Developing a thorough understanding of all contract documents, including plans, specifications, owner’s contract, subcontracts, and purchase orders.
Material Procurement: Assisting in the procurement of equipment and materials, and tracking/expediting their delivery to the site.
Cost Tracking: Calculating and maintaining self-performed work quantity and cost information to track project costs against budgets and establish historical cost data.

Specific Technical Skills Gained:

• Assisting with job office setup.
• Aiding the project team in the initial setup of CMiC (a construction management information system), specifically the Submittal Log Registry, and preparing/maintaining Submittal Logs.
• Assisting with the initial setup of PlanGrid to organize contract documents, managing progress photo documentation, and assisting with punch list preparation and weekly maintenance.
• Entering RFIs (Requests for Information) into CMiC and distributing them to appropriate team members, preparing/maintaining RFI Logs, and posting RFIs to Contract Documents to maintain accurate as-builts.
• Updating the Material Procurement Log and expediting material/equipment procurement.
• Working with Project Engineers (PEs), Senior Project Engineers (SPEs), and Assistant Project Managers (APMs) to compile contract closeout documents (O&M manuals, As-Builts).
• Attending project meetings and assisting in the preparation and distribution of meeting minutes.
• Assisting in the creation and organization of all closeout binders.

Management Skills Developed:

• Assisting with the procurement of closeout submittals and front-end submittals.
• Assisting Superintendents with schedule maintenance.
• Following up with Subcontractors and Material Suppliers to ensure timely material deliveries to the site.

Qualifications:

• This is an entry-level position specifically designed for undergraduate students and current employees aspiring to grow into management roles (e.g., project management, superintending, scheduling, safety).
Proficiency in basic computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• A basic understanding of scheduling and familiarity with CMiC applications.
• Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
• An understanding of basic construction administration processes, including construction documents, schedules, RFIs, submittals, and material procurement.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• The role requires physical ability to use construction personnel hoists, climb ladders, and negotiate work areas under construction when visiting job sites.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Requires the use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, and the ability to sit, talk, hear, and stand throughout the workday.
