About Company

The City of Boston’s Office of Labor Relations is a dynamic and fast-paced governmental office. It employs Labor Attorneys who provide essential legal counsel to various City departments on a wide range of labor matters. Their responsibilities include the administration of the City’s collective bargaining agreements, participating in negotiations with numerous City unions on both collective bargaining agreements and impact bargaining issues, and representing City departments in the grievance and arbitration process. Furthermore, they handle court proceedings and proceedings before state administrative agencies related to labor disputes.

Job Description

Job Title: Law Student Intern

Overview:
This is an exceptional opportunity for law students to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, fast-paced legal environment within the City of Boston’s Office of Labor Relations. The intern will work directly with Labor Attorneys, assisting them in their critical role of counseling City departments on various labor matters. This involves exposure to the administration of collective bargaining agreements, participation in negotiations with diverse City unions, and representation in grievance and arbitration processes, as well as court and administrative agency proceedings.

Key Responsibilities:
Assignments for this internship are varied, providing a comprehensive learning experience in labor law:
Assists with preparation for collective bargaining, which may involve research, drafting, and organizing materials for negotiations with various City unions.
Assists in the preparation of cases for arbitration and for hearings before the Department of Labor Relations, including gathering evidence, drafting briefs, and preparing witnesses.
Assists with preparation for and participation in mediations with various unions, gaining insight into dispute resolution processes.
Conducts extensive research and writing opportunities, which are core components of legal work, including legal research, drafting memos, and preparing legal documents.
Performs related work as required by the job, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to the evolving needs of the office.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
To be considered for this internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Students must be second-year law students, indicating a foundational understanding of legal principles.
Labor & Employment Law coursework desired, demonstrating a specific interest and some prior academic exposure to the field.
Strong writing and research skills are essential for performing the core duties of the role, including preparing legal documents and conducting thorough legal analysis.
Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job, ensuring accuracy and precision in legal work.

Terms of Employment:
Residency Requirement: BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.
Union/Salary Plan/Grade: Non-Union position.
Compensation: $20 per hour.
Hours per week: 20-35 hours, offering flexibility while providing substantial work experience.
Position Term: Fall 2025 Position.
