Zoo Intern | Dundee Township Park District

The Tone:
This is an unpaid seasonal internship at Dundee Township Park District, located in Carpentersville, IL. The Dundee Township Park District provides vital hands-on experience in a zoo setting, focusing on the daily care and well-being of more than 160 animals. This role is designed for college students or recent graduates to gain valuable real-world experience in zoology, animal science, or related fields. It offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced keepers, contribute to animal husbandry, and develop professional skills through meaningful projects.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Animal Care: Assist experienced keepers with essential daily animal care tasks, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and preparing specialized diets.
• Enrichment & Behavior: Develop and implement creative enrichment activities to support the mental and physical well-being of animals, while also monitoring and recording their behavior.
• Operational Support: Contribute to light maintenance and construction projects within the zoo, ensuring facilities are well-maintained and all safety protocols are diligently followed.
• Guest Engagement: Participate in and support educational presentations and special events, helping to enhance the experience for zoo guests and representing the district professionally.
• Research & Development: Conduct an animal behavior research project and complete a final zoo project, applying learned skills and contributing to the zoo’s knowledge base.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This is an entry-level role, suitable for a current college student or a recent graduate (within two years) actively pursuing studies in Zoology, Animal Science, or a closely related academic field.
• Experience: A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Preference is given to candidates who have completed at least two years of undergraduate coursework.
• Skills: Demonstrated ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs., bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods; Comfort and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions; Strong communication skills and professional demeanor for interacting with both guests and staff; Proven problem-solving ability and composure, particularly in high-stress or emergency situations.
• Bonus: Proficiency in Spanish-speaking skills is considered a valuable asset.
